Can anyone give any advice regarding excessive saliva, we are not able to use hyoscine patches as my husband also has glaucoma.

Most days he is constantly drooling and it is also causing problems pooling in his throat causing him to choke, he has nearly lost his cough function so has great difficulty clearing his throat.

well Lynda p I would try a bottle of dark grape juice first its

quite a pleasant drink and fairly cheap to buy if thois does not work because he has no cough to bring anything up would try a secretion pump or suction pump someone on here was talking

about one i think it was last month you will get more information on here im sure so stay with it mate also there is papaya tablets that he could chew which would help anyway give it a go if hes a diiabetic as well I should look at sugar content in grape juice just to make sure he is comfortable with it peter jones queensland Australia psp sufferer

I have not had to deal with this problem but I understand that Botox injections may help with reducing the saliva. You might check more into that.

You can put three or four drops of eye drops under the tongue to control saliva. Eye drops have a certain ingredient that will control saliva. The ingredient is atropine and I think you can get it outside of eye drops but I'm not sure about that. Search this site for saliva you'll find the links/comments on eye drops and saliva.

Atropine is an ingredient in many eye drops. That is the ingredient that works for saliva build up. I think you can also get atropine by its self but may require prescription.

My husband produces a lot of saliva too, fortunately it is not too excessive, but it makes him cough a lot. He drinks both grape juice and pineapple juice and both are reasonably effective, or even just plain water seems to help him.

At rest, I have to put him on his side to prevent the secretions from going down the back of his throat, but he invariably ends up on his back whenever I check him!

We are are also fortunate in having a suction machine which I got from the physiotherapist. I have only had to use it a couple of times but it works and is the most efficient way of removing the saliva in and around the mouth. I cannot use it to remove secretions from the throat though as that needs a professional.
