My mom was diagnosed in 2010 but had symptoms for several years. She' s 85 and has been in a nursing home since March 2013.

Hi MaryKay,
I'm sorry to hear the news about your Mum, PSP is such a horrible disease. I do hope that you and your family are getting all the support you need. You'll find a wealth of information and support on this site from people who understand and empathise with you as they have experienced, or are experiencing, the same things.

hi marykay perhaps you could try having dinner a bit earlier maybe a couple of hours before your mum retires for the night it might stop and particles of food getting trapped in the throat and agravating a cough which it does do when your mum is laying down or try lifting the bed up on the
head end so the head is raised up more you can get bed raisers but the cheapest way out is a couple of bricks under the legs of the bed hope this helps anything is worth a try to keep mum comfortable good luck mate peter jones qld australia psp sufferer
Thank you. She is in a facility now. She's in a hospital bed that raises. Her food is chopped for easier swallowing. She also broke her hip this summer which complicated her physical activity. She was taking re hab 3 times per week until the hip broke. then the incision got infected. Her immune system was so low. I can't believe she survived it. She has such a will!

I know what you mean about their strength-mum had a severe reaction to a trial drug, laer got a massive infection where we thought we'd lost her-out for the count for 2 days n hospital and then in a month back to where she had been. Then she got Shingles over her eye triggered when she was over heated by a hairdryer(very high pain resistance and didn't tell anyone she was burning), loads of UTIs but fought them all back. In end stage we never really could tell if it was another set back until everything seized up at the last minute.
