Had recurrent hematuria postSBRT, usually at the end of micturition. Had several cystoscopies which onco-urologist only confirmed neovascularization. Subsequent few episodes of gross hematuria with clot formation after weight-bearing. Underwent 50 sessions of hyperbaric treatment. Hematuria stopped temporarily but recurred after about two months, again typically at the very end of micturition. After about three months, no further bleeding detected.
I believe my hematuria is not from radiation cystitis, but rather from my original RARP with poor anastomosis of the urethral vesicular junction, and that was the reason why bleeding typically appeared at the end of urination. I still have to avoid hot spicy food, which would trigger hematuria again. This might be secondary to vasodilatation.
Beware of hyperbaric treatment. It may induce or accelerate the progress of existing cataract. I had to undergo lens transplant because of rapid deterioration.
I started getting hematuria about 9-10 months post SBRT. My radiation oncologist said it was common, especially at around a year post treatment. It lasted about three months on/off, especially after rigorous exercise or ejaculation. I eventually passed a blood clot in my urine at the of the stream along with a couple of brown drops, and it hasn’t returned since for the past two months. I did finally give in to my urologist and had a cystoscopy and ct scan approximately two weeks after having no further hematuria. All was clear. I also just want to say that the cystoscopy was not bad at all. Many made it sound like an awful experience, but it was not…strange? Yes… but not that bad. Good to get the all clear for now!
I experienced it a few times, over the three years since LDR brachytherapy, but very sporadically and only in a single urination (it stopped by the next time I went). Looked like scar tissue, a few pieces. And then it wouldn't happen again for months.
Then, three years post-treatment, it happened for several urinations continually over a period of about a day. Urologist said it was be best to get cystoscopy and urogram (CT scan) to rule out bladder or kidney issues. I did, and all was clear.
