bph worries

hi, as I’ve been recently diagnosed with bph I have a lot of worries. The medication tamulosin is helping me - even if making me very irritable.

I also have bad mental health and anxiety so sometimes I feel my dr isn’t being straight up front with me.

I suppose a lot of people have asked for reassurance and I know I won’t be the first and won’t be the last , but does bph increase your chances of getting prostate cancer?

For everyone going through these awful conditions I pray for you! X

Rob

The risk of both increases with age.

I had TURP surgery for BPH. My only regret was waiting as long as I did. The medication I was on was a poorly effective 'band-aid'. The vast majority of men are thrilled with the results of TURP; I certainly was. 10 years after the TURP surgery I was diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer. 8 years later I am doing fine. My TURP surgeon did mention that the TURP surgery was not a guarantee that I wouldn't develop prostate cancer. He was right.

I am glad you are doing fine. Can I ask if the turp affected the bedroom department. I’m only 41 I’d like to to think I’d be fit and active when I’m 60.

also does turp require a hospital stay?

At the moment the tamsulosin is doing its job- last October I went through a whole month where I couldnt pee standing and every time I strained like mad to go- it was exhausting. I put it down to bad anxiety and nerves. Now every time I go away on a long journey I’m just fearing straining again.

If you travel you might want to have an emergency catheter that you can self-administer in case you went into urinary 'retention' (completely blocked) and were unable to get to an ER promptly. My TURP surgery caused retrograde ejaculation -- the semen ends up in the bladder instead of discharging normally. That would make fathering a child challenging. I did spend one night in the hospital following the surgery.
