On ADT and suffering?

medpagetoday.com/meetingcov...

That might help. I'm no longer on ADT so I can't speak from personal experiences...

Check the contraindications. I am not sure this is appropriate for anyone with BPH symptoms or urinary retention/low flow that is induced as a side effect of radiotherapy.

Interesting. My oncologist prescribed oxybutynin about 2 weeks into 28 IMRT treatments, which I finished May31. I was already on 2 Tamsulosin dose for slow and erratic flow. He said tamsulosin for flow, oxybutynin for urgency. I also had 3 month Eligard shot April 11, before start of radiation, another 3 month to come in mid July. Thus far I have had no symptoms at all other than the urinary flow, which already seems (maybe my imagination?) a little improved 4 days after last radiation, and of course paltry libido, though no physical changes that I can see anyway. Was wondering about the ADT symptoms, concerned they're just delayed, or maybe I'm lucky? Now I'm wondering if the oxybutynin may have had some effect. I did have a dry mouth, also seems better now even as I continue 10mg dose per day. Not sure if it helped with urgency as I still went pretty often daytime and 5-7 times a night. Last 2 nights were 4 and three, so hope that keeps up or improves. Big concern is that I make the first 3 month Eligard (relatively!) unscathed and the second shot nails me. Won't know about the PSA for a few months of course.

We could be twins from a different mother. I am only on half the dose but all else is the same. I am almost 9 to 10 months ahead of you. Glad to report ADT SE are gone. They were minor and T came back 2 months after stopping ADT. Daytime peeing is normal night time is down from 4 to 5 times a night to 2 to 3 and last night was none. So I see some slow progress with that.

We do have one slight difference. I had my pelvic area radiated and I believe this caused some bowel issues but that also has improved.

My PSA over the last 12 months has been <.01 for nine months and last two PSAs were .02 and .04. Waiting on new PSA and T results this week and have one year follow up next week with my RO.

Life is good and I continue to hit the gym and do aerobics daily.

So as you look ahead things are looking good for you too.

Thanks, very encouraging! I did also have the pelvic radiation, with SpaceOAR, and had really no bowel side effects, other than a little diarrhea, which could also be caused by the meds. Did you have the 6 mo ADT? Did the second half change things much? I could refuse the shot because I worry about bone loss, muscle, and T recovery, but if SE's don't change, would be able to deal with it and maybe little more confident in cure. I hate specifically doing exercise, but do aerobics 3 times a week and try to walk a mile every day. A lot of outside work on 9 acre rural property. Being more careful with diet and only an occasional beer. Have actually lost 2 or 3 pounds and was not overweight to begin with. Have not suffered from any fatigue I thought unusual fo 74 year old thus far. Didn't give up my 2 cups of morning coffee yet. Hope I can have your success by next spring.

Here is my 6 month PSA was <.01. I was off ADT 2 months then. I too had spacer before radiation. I am just a tad older at 79. I do go to the gym every day for resistance work. I walk around 5.5 to 6 miles everyday with my dogs.

Hoping to get 5 good years without ADT. I have an aunt who is 96 and she hates living. I can not say I blame her.

As I have seen many times (parents and grandparents mostly in late 80's or 90's when passing), many people do reach a time when they are ready and even happy to go. I hope I can live long enough to reach that point, whenever it is, that they did, without that being caused solely by misery and pain. Hope you reach your goal.

Forgot to thank you for interesting link. I see oxybutylin is pretty well tolerated. My prescription covers months, so I'll stay on it for a while and see what happens.
