PSA 5.4

On 10/20 of this year I had a routine checkup. My last 3 PSA test were, 4.8-4.4 in 2021 then on 3/17/22 it was down to 3.8 then 5.4 on 10/20/22.

I drove 2.5 hrs and was eating very spicy snacks all the way before going straight to my Drs appt. Could the sitting and spicy snacks be the cause of an elevated PSA. Is that possible? I also have had a weak urine flow at times. No pain. Slight Peyronies disease. Active, run , exercise, yard work etc. Just turned 65. Retired. Dad was diagnosed with PC 20 years ago and just turned 89 himself. Dad was diagnosed at 75 yo

I have a follow up test in 30 days.

Thank you

No, driving and spicy snacks could not affect your PSA.

That see-saw pattern suggests prostatitis. Ask for the Prostate Health Index (PHI) test next time instead of just a PSA test.

My husband’s PSA went up and down like that. Asymptomatic. But turned out to be advanced PC. His is an unusual case but I’d play it safe and get an MRI. No downside to checking.

I’ve had prostatitis for 40 years, and had been watching a very slowly elevating PSA, when it reached 5.5 I went for an MRI, found a lesion, got a biopsy, had PC, treated it with some radiation and it’s in the rearview mirror (I’m told). Better to take a look, than to guess. MRI is completely painless and non-invasive. Good luck.

Thank you. That's right about where mine is at 5.4.

At an annual physical in May of '21 had a PSA of 5 with similar symptoms to you. Took another PSA a month later and it was up to 8. Panic! Went to a urologist at SLK who decided that I get an MRI. MRI showed two lesions, a Pyrads 3 and a 4. Prostate size 36 cc. Second read of MRI at Weill showed some possible disagreement, maybe both Pyrads 3. Had biopsy done at SLK in August of '21. 10 scores, including targets, showed all benign, with one HGPin. Second read of biopsy at Hopkins by Dr. G showed all benign. By Nov. '21 PSA down to 3.3. March '22, PSA at 3.6. Two weeks ago, down to 2.6. Wonky crap. Hopefully just prostatitis for us both, but can never be too sure.

Hi all. Just had a phone appt with Urologist. To review what brought me to this point. On 10/28/21 I had a PSA test of 4.6....next test as follows..11/26/21 (4.4)...3/17/22 (3.8)...10/20/22 (5.4)...11/30/22 (5.0)...65 years old, Dad diagnosed with PC at 75 years old 88 years old now doing great. My wife had a TIA event(mini stroke) Nov 3rd. I'm her caregiver 24/7 traveling to and from hospital for 21 days. During this time I had developed an extreme urge to urinate throughout the day. Sometimes I could barely get started, morning especially. I started drinking cranberry juice, pomegranate and plenty of water. Symptoms resolved and haven't returned. Was tested for UTI and no evidence. So maybe really dehydrated or ?. Urologist said by his calculations if it is PC it is not aggressive and could wait 3 months and take another test or do biopsy. My 58 year old brother had elevated PSA and did the MRI and biopsy in that order and was all clear no PC. I haven't asked about PHI, MRI, test and surprised Urologist hadn't either. Any thoughts welcome. Thank you.
