After two weeks on Tamsulosin, noticing leg cramps at night

On September 24th I finished SBRT treatment for PCa, Treatment was with ViewRay SBRT at UCLA.

After the third treatment session, I started to have urinary retention, and was given flomax, which immediately improved the urinary retention, though it was still a slower flow than before treatment. I also am experience some burning during urination, though that has been improving.

The problem I seem to be noticing is that I have been starting to get leg cramps at night, and was wondering if tamsulosin can contribute to that, which I have been taking in the evening after dinner, .4mg., and if anyone else has experienced leg cramps when on tamsulosin?

You may be dehydrated.

Good point Allen. I have been drinking less since the treatment. I will increase my liquid intake

Thanks for the suggestion

I’m on the same dosage and used to suffer from terrible night cramps. I started taking magnesium twice a day 475mg. After a few days my cramps started to diminish and now they have almost completely gone. Mg is definitely worth a try. Good luck 👍

Exercise as much as you can and hydrate.

If you hydrate well during the earlier part of the day you can stop a few hours before bed and thus not risk having to get up to pee a lot.

Yes, to the magnesium for cramps.

It’s not the Tamsulosin. I get leg cramps when I let myself get dehydrated and low in salt.

Interesting, I’ve been on Flomax about a year, never experienced the effects. Thanks for the heads up re: Hydrate, exercise and MG. Battle on!

As TA suggested, it may be dehydration. Been on T since April and had some issues of getting up frequently at night so watched my fluid intake. Basically I just made sure I took fluids throughout the day and did not drink after 6 pm, which helped And BTW - what really helped, after exploring other options, was taking 2 T doses at night instead of 1 at night and 1 in the morning. And......things will get better with time after your radiation treatment. Best of luck.

I haven't noticed any increase in the frequency of leg cramps. I play quite a bit of pickleball, losing loads of water in the process. I did start to get more cramps but increasing water intake along with some electrolytes fixed that quickly.
