Prostate cancer after a TURP

I have a good friend in Canada who had a TURP a couple of weeks ago. The material removed during the TURP was biopsied and showed a Gleason 6 (3+3). There was a certain amount of bleeding for a few days after the TURP. He is OK now, but he is worried if the cancer could have spread as a result of the bleeding. Has anyone out there had a similar experience?

Thank you!

It is unlikely that cancer would spread through the bleeding of a TURP.

No, prostate cancer that is GS 3+3 cannot metastasize. I hope he is considering active surveillance.

Spreading prostate cancer through blood in the operating field is apparently an issue.

Surgeons claim it isn't an issue in prostate cancer operations. Apparently Docs whose livelyhood isn't so closely intertwined with such situations aren't in full agreement with that proposition.

Absent clinical data supporting anecdotal protestations... Seeding (distant metastasis) from cutting into cancerous tissue has been debunked! Otherwise every single RP patient would wind up metastatic! Can it happen? Yes, in theory, but it takes a lot for a cell that is released to be able to attach, grow veins or vessels that will supply blood and survive... A very very remote possibility and highly non-probability! So, NO is the simple answer. Focus on what is and can be seen, ie, the Gleason 6 (3+3) tissue and be diligent in AS!

Good luck and best regards!
