Tall Allen ?

I read in 1 of your previous posts that you were prescribed a sleep aid. If you would be so kind, I’d love to know what it is and whether or not there are any negatives/contraindications to it. Btw, I greatly value your contributions to this forum.

When I was first diagnosed, I couldn't get to sleep. My doctor prescribed Lunesta (eszopiclone), which I took for about 2 weeks. I don't remember the dose - but taking enough is important. Lately, I have been having trouble sleeping and my neurologist recommended Melatonin 10 mg. It works very well for me. He said most people who take it don't take enough.

Thank you. I’m already taking melatonin & have been for quite some time. It DOES help me get back to sleep after getting up to pee but broken sleep throughout the night concerns me. I also just read that even melatonin shouldn’t be taken every night. I finished Duke sbrt 5 wks ago. Still getting up most nights 4,5,6 xs/night. I know it takes 2-3 mos. for everything to settle down but my pretreatment habits were 2-3 xs. Just thought there was some safe substance out there I didn’t know about that I may benefit from. Thanks

My neurologist said it was completely safe. Do you have a reference for the danger of taking it every night? If so, I will ask him to comment.

Sorry, but could not find the specific article I read that made everyday use seem more problematic . I did run into this Hopkins article though. I guess if we have no other conditions or medications it would be ok. Most info. I’ve read seem to state only taking it short term or intermittently. I’ve been taking it pretty regularly for a couple yrs now.

According to this review, it's safe and effective. No serious adverse effects from high dose or long term use.

"In general, animal and human studies documented that short-term use of melatonin is safe, even in extreme doses. Only mild adverse effects, such as dizziness, headache, nausea and sleepiness have been reported. No studies have indicated that exogenous melatonin should induce any serious adverse effects. Similarly, randomized clinical studies indicate that long-term melatonin treatment causes only mild adverse effects comparable to placebo.

If you see any contraindication in a peer-reviewed journal, please let me know.

Burnett1948 Is there any difference between Lupron and Lucron?

Burnett1948 profile image
Burnett1948 in reply to Burnett1948

I am on Lucron. I am in hospital in Queensland Australia with a Stroke. The Hospital gave me clot busting medication and I am getting better. The Hospital doctors are giving me a MRI in the morning. They want to find out why I got it. Can you tell me if my hormone treatment could have caused the Stroke?

It is known to increase the odds for a cardiovascular incidence. Firmagon and the oral Orgovix behave better.

Similar to TallAllen, I take 10 mg melatonin (gummies) every evening. Works well for me.

Even 20 mg of melatonin does nothing for me. An old doctor friend of mine from Harvard prescribed Temazepam for me about 35 years ago which he believed (taking it even every night if necessary) was less harmful than sleep deprivation. I try to take the smallest amount, and also alternate sleep meds. Obviously I'm addicted since I cannot get a decent night's rest without taking something! When I don't take something, I toss & turn all night and feel like sh*t in the morning. I'm still kicking at 78 and feel great every morning when I arise. I've tried everything that has ever been recommended; however, 'no joy'.

insomnia is a serious problem ... sleeps aid far outweigh any possible side effects

This is exactly what my good old doctor friend said, and he didn't prescribe meds for me to make any money! My daughter and her husband are both doctors in Chicago and they love sleep aids; however, they will not prescribe them for themselves or each other for fear of getting into trouble. Consequently, they have me send them meds from Thailand since I can buy almost anything here without a prescription. One of their favorites (and mine) is Clonazepam. ½ of the 2 mg tablet does a great job of giving us 6 to 7 hours of sound sleep with 'zero' hangover in the morning.

Scooter22, I had a tough time getting to sleep due to pain from the metastases in my back and ribs until I started using Melatonin 10mg tabs an hour or so before bedtime.

It has done the trick for a couple of months now.

I normally wake up twice during the night to urinate and then go back to sleep right away since I started taking the Melatonin.

I've had a similar sleep problem spending many nights wide awake after getting up to urinate. Since I downloaded a Tinnitus Aid app on my phone I have had no issues - listening to the sound of rain in an Oregon Costal Rainforest puts me right back to sleep. I set the app for 30 minutes and am sound asleep long before it reaches its end. I got the idea listening to the sound machine my son uses for his one year old and I must say it works wonders. Lots of free apps to be had if you are interested in giving it a try.

The Alexa (Amazon) will also play sleepMusic for you too.

been using VERY quiet music for many years...also noted that fan in summer has same effect! anything calming and barely audible.....helps to shut down the brain....not that it takes much for that these days!

I’ve used a CBD gummy made by Receptra. Like it much better than the Lunesta type… I prefer, for prescriptions, … Lorazapan. I break the low dose 5mg. Into quarters and it works. Takes some experimenting and everyone is different in response. Use the lowest dose you need. Even for melatonin.

I use 180mg every night. Melatonin Max 60mg x 3. Only side effect was vivid dreams. Never had many dreams but now I can go back to a dream after waking for short period. Kind of cool. Here is a video that gives more info. There is other info out there on melatonin and prostate cancer.

On my own re supplements. Get these on Amazon or a recurring order from Melatonin Max website. I do have a nutritionist, and another oncology nutritionist at U Chicago who get my spreadsheet on all I take.

I take 3 kinds of melatonin: 3 mg, 5 mg time release, and 3 mg with theanine. I also take a broad spectrum CBD gummy and a 5 mg indica gummy chunk. Then I bolt on my CPAP mask and away I go. My cardiologist had me go in for a sleep study before a-fib ablation surgery. I was found to have sleep apnea. I had complained of tiredness / fatigue to my GP many times and he never thought to have me tested for sleep apnea. I guess I didn't fit the typical profile of being overweight. For a severe insomnia situation (very rare) I have a low dose lorazepam (1 mg) prescription. My previous GP refused to renew my prescription. When he left and I got a new GP she readily refilled it. Doctors can be weird.

For those who are taking melatonin, I wonder if you could comment -- what do we know wrt taking more when we wake up to urinate, e.g. halfway thru the night? Does that disrupt the sleep clock that melatonin is supposed to regulate, or does it end up being insignificant impact?

Thanks for any thoughts on this. My web research has turned up differing answers (first time ever for the internet, right?). Perhaps some of you have spoken to your medical provider about this?
