Saw palmetto

I experienced enlarged prostate symptoms (frequent, limited urination) in my late 30's, which disappeared as soon as I started taking a daily tablet of saw palmetto extract. It's been 25 years and over 9,000 tablets later, I'm still symptom free.

Saw palmetto may mask PSA.

17 years ago I was coming down the elevator at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas with three urologists who had just finished a day of annual PCa screening. I mentioned to them that I had a significant family history of PCa and I for me it wasn't a matter of 'will' but 'when'. I then told them that I was doing/taking all the recommended 'stuff' like saw palmetto, vitamin E, zinc, selenium, etc in an effort to combat this nasty disease. One of them said, "There is a chance that those supplements (especially the saw palmetto) may mask symptoms/PSA." Sure enough, two years later, totally asymptomatic with a PSA of <5.0, Gleason 8, I was diagnosed with this crap! My surgeon who performed my RP told me that I most likely had PCa for AT LEAST five years.

I hope that you are being screened for prostate cancer annually. Prostate cancer is asymptomatic in its beginning stages. Screening means DRE and PSA. BTW I did have BPH and received TURP surgery for that, ten years prior to my DRE revealed prostate cancer. Saw palmetto did nothing for my BPH symptoms.

Great news.... but check your PSA (yearly). Don't worry about the digital exam....It's better to get poked there than being poked in your eye with a stick.

Keep us posted....
