Does anyone have any experience of hypno birthing. If so can you recommend a good CD and book?

Margaret Howell's "Effective Birth Preparation" was really helpful for me. I started listening to it in the last trimester and it helped me relax, sleep and connect with my baby. The exercises were really helpful support to me during birth. I liked it because it was sensible and not too "full on" if you know what I mean.

I've found Zita Wests products extremely useful, which some are available on Amazon - (or direct from her website). Easy to listen to voice and very calming.

Hi - Margaret Howell's approach (as mentioned above) is BRILLIANT - it is called Natal Hypnotherapy. I live in West Surrey and attended a 2day course with a tutor called Cathy who was brilliant. I went from being a freaked out stresshead about labour to a fairly well-controlled mum-to-be by the time I was induced (and this was only a week after the course - you should ideally start practising a few months before delivery!)

Google natal hypnotherapy or message me again and i can give you more info, Good luck!

Marie Mongon's method/ book is excellent but you need to do a class with it. I don't know where you are in the UK, but there is a great class run by a lady called Dany Griffiths in Sidcup, Kent. her website is Tums to Mums and if the cost of the class is a little too much, she does run a home study course with resources for around £25. Order Marie Mongon's book though, i really recommend it and Hypnobirthing. I have not given birth yet (i have 3 weeks to go!) but even if things do not go to plan, I have had 9 worry free months, feeling just so confident and excited about the birth rather than fearing it as I did before. Good luck xxx

Thanks. The name Margaret Howell's name keeps coming up so we might try one of her books, or maybe Marie Mongon. We're having a class next week so that should help a lot.

Get the Marie Mongon book anyway even if you do the Howell method or Natal Hypno....Its good to see which method works for you. The Mongon method was the original i think, probably much of a muchness but the book is really good. Best of luck x

We are using the Marie mongan hypnobirthing too and it's been an amazing experience - we've been to the classes too but the book is excellent at explaining the techniques but also why it works which has really helped us fully embrace it and with the visualisations. Think the website is hypnobirthing.co.uk. Also, if you want a lovely relaxation cd of music to play in the background, they use one called 'comfort zone' by Steven halpern - because we've practiced with it, the second I hear the opening cords, I'm away with the fairies!!!!

Hi Matt,

You can purchase Hypnobirthing from Marie Mongan from NCT Shop online at nctshop.co.uk/HypnoBirthing...

NCT shop also have a wider selection of HypnoTherapy to help prepare for birth, whether it's a home birth, a ceasarean, twins, etc. Just search 'hypno' when you visit nctshop.co.uk.

Hope this helps!

Best,

Alice

Hi- we did a course with a brilliant hypnobirthing instructor (who used Marie Mongan book) when I was pregnant with my first baby and I recommend it to everyone! I had planned a lovely relaxed waterbirth and things didn't work out that way as my baby was late and I had to be induced, but even with the syntocin drip (which makes the contractions really intense) I didn't have any painkillers, just the TENS machine, a waterspray and lots of Lucozade! I found giving birth a really powerful and amazing experience, especially the pushing part and when she came out. The hardest bit was when I was dilating, but I found that when I started to panic it got painful, and when I relaxed and breathed really deeply as we'd practised it was fine- my body was working with me not tensing up and working against me. Also my husband had a role and knew what to do which was brilliant. I am now pregnant with my second baby and definitely going to do hypnobirthing again this time. Good luck!

I am a qualified Hypnotherapist and have recently done the Easibirth practitioner training with Sharon Mustard (who provides hypnobirthing classes to the NHS) in her area -Salisbury.

I absolutely agree that the Marie Mongan Hypnobirthing book is excellent and if you and your birthing partner would also like to learn hypnobirthing in person from a trained practitioner, then there is a list of qualified practitioners around the country on her website. (When I've finished my essay hopefully I will be on there too :-)

There are other hypnobirthing teachers out there too, I would recommend that you go to someone who has a specialist qualification in it if you do want to do it in person.

I have to jump in and recommend the Hypnobirthing Book by Katharine Graves. I just did her course and bought the book afterwards. It's really lovely, explains everything really clearly, and includes relaxation techniques and scripts which are helping hugely. You don't need to have done her course first as I know she also has CDs which you could get too.

For some strange reason it's not in the NCT bookshop, but it is on Amazon.
