Potty training

Hi, we started potty training this morning, my daughter is 2 years 5 months. After a lot of encouragement she has sat on the potty every 25 mins but has not had a wee or poo on it. She has wet her knickers 3 times but hasn’t told me when she has done so and doesn’t seem to be bothered being in wet pants. We are due to go on holiday in 5 weeks so not sure whether to leave it as she may not be ready and to try again in a few weeks. What are people’s thoughts? Thanks

Has she shown any signs that she knows what to do on the potty? I think it might take a while for her to understand what you want her to do, especially if she's not really showing any signs of wanting to use the potty. We did a lot of nappy free time and potty reminders, we didn't real do anything in pants until she was using the potty fairly consistently without a nappy on. It does take a while for them to realise what going on the potty is for.

If you're going on holiday on 5 weeks I'd be tempted to leave it till you get back, the change in routine might not help and she may just have lots of accidents.

Good luck with it

yeah I would leave it she doesn’t sound ready 🤗 we tried a few months ago (2 years 7 months) at Christmas and whilst he was peeing on the potty it was only when I reminded him to go do it never really off his own back so he was having accidents a lot too so I paused it after 2 weeks, still offering it if he wants it but not nappy free like I was for those few weeks. The last few days he’s been asking for the potty a lot more and either having dry nappies in between or taking his nappy off as soon as he’s peed if he doesn’t make the potty, also he went off to the bathroom himself yesterday and I found he had put his wee steps and seat on himself taken down his jammies and nappy and was peeing all by himself without even asking so I’m going to try again nappy free now he’s showing stronger signs of knowing when he needs to go. He still hasn’t done a poo on the toilet/potty though so I think that will be our biggest hurdle to being nappy free. I think sometimes they just need a few more weeks/months and then they just get it.

I read somewhere they will get it when they are going to get it so starting too early just makes the process longer so that’s chilled me out a bit as I was worried about him turning 3 in a few months and not being potty trained (and some of the mum shame I might get for it too!) but apparently it’s quite normal to be nearer 3 or even a little after 3 even sometimes xx
