Community midwife appointments

According to the plan in my green folder I should be seeing the midwife at 16weeks to discuss screening results. However, I didn't have the screening done at the dating scan. Now I am unsure should I be making an appointment with the midwife or is it not necessary?

At your 16 week scan they usually will take your blood pressure, check your urine for protein and just have a chat with you. If your screening was done at a different time or you've had bloods taken they could still chat to you then. If you didn't have any screening done, then you would just not go through anything like that at the appointment, but it's still worth having your health checked to make sure you've not got any issues.

Thank you for your reply. There isn't a 16 week scan. It is just a community midwife app. The next scan is at 20 weeks. I just wonder if there is anything else they will discuss

Sorry 16 week appointment, they don't really discuss anything, just do your health checks and sometimes listen to the heartbeat. I would recommend attending all your appointments. If you did have any blood pressure issues or signs of pre-eclampsia then it's best these are picked up as early as possible.

Hi CatMum2019, If this is your first pregnancy then the midwives should've arranged a 16 week appointment with you.

I didn't get the screening done either but they still went through my blood test results from the booking appointment, took my blood pressure and a urine sample and had a general chat.

16 weeks appointment they also did the blood tests for us that determine whether you need something during labour (I can’t remember what now for the life of me but it’s really important as they messed my bloods up and I had to do it again) your blood group including if you are rhesus negative is a regular check for protein in the urine etc to make sure no signs of preeclampsia diabetes etc. or low iron. it was also the first time on the nhs we heard the heartbeat (Doppler as it’s not a scan appointment) we had private scans so had heard it before but not a nhs. So yeah I would defo me making that appointment if they haven’t already sent you one. To be honest be didn’t already discuss screening results as far as I remember as the hospital did that straight after the scan xx

How amazing! In my area, they won't allow us to listen to the heartbeat until 20 weeks and beyond! ☹️

Yeah they do that with the scans too in Scotland but at the 16 week they do the manual Doppler check and let you hear 🤗 which is quite nice and feels a bit ‘old school’ somehow which is even better xx
