Pregnancy sickness - medication

Hi,

I am 7 weeks and for the last couple of weeks have been suffering from horrendous nausea and vomiting that’s just getting worse. I’ve been prescribed 3 cyclizine a day which didn’t completely stop the nausea but did help greatly when I was pregnant with my son. This time doesn’t seem to be doing anything 😫. I’m rarely actually sick this time but am sort of violently wretching all day (sorry!)

I really need to get a grip on it because I don’t want to have to tell work yet, but after a long stint of wfh after covid, they want us back in the office now. There is no way I can do an hour each way public transport commute and then a day of being upright like this! What have you been prescribed that’s worked? Maybe a combination of things? Please no crackers/ginger suggestions, literally nothing like that is helping. Thanks x

I think you might need to tell them so you can work from home a little longer, literally nothing helped me except ice lollies. They can try you on different meds though sometimes that helps, no way I could have commuted though! I hope it eases soon for you 💜

Ahhh Solly I feel your pain! Didn’t have anything with my little boy (now 2.5yrs) and finding the constant nausea/ unable to eat much this time around pretty horrible to cope with. Currently 11 weeks and slightly better, but mainly surviving on cereal, crisps and digestive biscuits 🙈

I’m not sure it’s possible to just get a grip on it tbh, unless your GP can try you on some different meds which work better for you- would def speak to them as think other options are available. Could you maybe just tell your direct manager at work and request they don’t tell anyone else right now? So can cont to wfh for now? Or if you’re not able to/ simply not well enough to cope with work (including the commute etc)/ not eating then don’t feel bad about taking some time off sick. I’ve had a little time off and it’s made me realise how much tiredness worsens my nausea, so I’m a bit anxious to see how it goes going back this week. Im usually a real night owl but recently asleep by 9pm 😂

Hope you find something that works, but don’t be too hard on yourself.. if you had the same symptoms with an illness not pregnancy you’d probably call in sick! xx

so sorry you’re feeling this way, it really is awful! So I had a bad patch in first trimester, I got to a breaking point with it and called my EPU. They brought me in and gave me an injection which helped a little. They also gave me some other meds that I could use alongside my cyclizine. So sorry I don’t know the name, I didn’t end up taking them cos the taste made me sick (they were dissolved in the top of your lip). But could you try your GP to see if there are any other meds to try. I know there’s different things you can try the later you get into your pregnancy too. Hope you start to feel better soon x

I started on cyclizine and ended up trying it again later along when it worked much better. I got prescribed metoclopramide after cyclizine didn't work, so I then tried prochlorperazine which worked for a while, then moved back into cyclizine which worked best until I had baby. It didn't cure the sickness but made it alot better. my midwife said that even if I wasn't throwing up, exaggerate with the Gp so they try something else. All the best lovely! xxx

forgot to add... I still ended up getting signed off work for a lot of the pregnancy, best thing I did as well. The sickness was bad enough on its own without travel sickness to and from work along with the stress of dealing with the lifestyle/health issues of the particular client group that I work with!

get signed off and ask for Ondansetron alongside cyclizine

Prochlorperazine worked for me as i was sick all times of the day and couldnt keep much down, not even water. Ended up with alopecia and had to take vitamin D too.

Thanks everyone! I haven’t replied because I’ve been hugging the toilet for the last 2 days. I spoke to my GP again who said I can’t take ondansetron due to another medication I take, but I’ve started on prochlorperazine today and it’s been a huge help - I’ve been able to eat and keep water down so 🙏 it continues!

Thanks I will look this up. I got huge relief from trying prochlorperazine but unfortunately it was short lived so I’m on the look out for something new! x
