Light bleeding and slight cramps at 6 weeks

Hello.

I'm 6 weeks pregnant today and am over the moon after 2 years of trying. I'm just slightly concerned as I am seeing very light blood spotting when I go to the toilet (I can only see it on the tissue), and am a little bit uncomfortable with very slight cramps. I'm sure I'm just being paranoid, but is this normal? If it's implantation bleeding, I would have thought this would have happened earlier? I know my body is doing lots of intense stuff rigt now, I'm just on high alert!

I don't have contact details for my midwife yet as I'm not scheduled to see her for another 3 weeks, so thought one of you lovely people could just help me put my mind at rest.

Firstly congratulations! Those early weeks of pregnancy are super intense and it’s totally understandable for you to feel anxious. Spotting can be normal for some women right the way through pregnancy and if it is only on the paper when you wipe it sounds very light indeed. Cramping can also be because your uterus is starting to stretch.

You can drive yourself crazy at this point Googling and it is not always very helpful. If I were you, to put your mind at ease I’d contact my Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit. As you’re 6 weeks they should be able to scan you and give you complete piece of mind. I think some places you can refer yourself just be contacting your hospital switchboard.

Thank you so much for your reply. I can't tell you how comforting it is just to speak to someone about it, as obviously, I've told noone I'm pregnant yet! I rang my GP yesterday and managed to get to speak to a doctor who has booked me in to have an early scan on Saturday at the Early Pregnancy Unit - so I'm feeling relieved that my concerns are being looked into. I'm hopeful it's all fine and was a little bit of bleeding for whatever reason, but nothing sinister. There's no blood today and the cramps have stopped, so fingers crossed I've got nothing to worry about. I don't think my heart could take it! Thank you again, so much for replying. It's really made me feel much better xx ❤️

So glad you’ve got yourself booked in. That all sounds positive that it has stopped so keep positive, look after yourself and keep away from Google! Keeping everything crossed for you. Pregnancy anxiety is super tough! Xxx

We went to the early scan, and it was amazing. We saw the heartbeat and got told that everything looks great. I know it's very early, but I've never sobbed like that. My husband said it was the most amazing thing he's ever seen. I can't wait for the next scan. My heart is so full xxx

aww this is the best news! So pleased for you.

I had a miscarriage in January and after going through that the relief a scan brings is something else! Currently 36 weeks pregnant and it never gets old seeing your little one like that. Last week my husband and I were watching our baby swallow! Just incredible!

Hi Yonna. I just wanted to let you know that we went for our second scan, and we were given the devastating news that our baby's heart had stopped beating around a week earlier. I've never been so heartbroken in my life and have had the most traumatic 72 hours I can ever remember.

I remembered you saying that you had gone through a miscarriage in January. I don't know how you got through it, but I hope I can do the same, and feel the joy you're feeling now.

I think my heart has stopped beating too x

Good morning and congratulations!

My advice to you would be try and get yourself booked in with the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit. It could be absolutely nothing to worry about. My last pregnancy I was bleeding from 5 weeks, I had a telephone consultation with my GP and luckily they referred me the same day to get a scan. I bled for weeks but baby was absolutely fine.

Implantation bleeding is normally pink / brownish. I have also experienced miscarriages, bleeding was more like period blood (red in colour) and the cramps became quite intense like a painful period.

Don’t scare yourself with Google, everyone’s journey and experiences are different. Many women experience bleeding in early pregnancy but definitely try to get an appointment if you can. More to put your mind at rest. The first 12 weeks are stressful enough.
