I’m 22 weeks tomorrow and haven’t felt the baby kick yet. It’s my first but she’s an IVF baby and anxiety is high. I even saw the consultant last Thursday and she checked for the heartbeat which was fine but I feel like I was feeling the start of some ‘flutters’ and then now I can’t really feel anything. Should I be contacting the midwife?!
Any advice gratefully received 🙏
Xx
EDIT: I went in to the MAU today and all was fine. Heartbeat all perfect and she’s wriggling about. Thanks to your kind comments and reassurance though I went to hospital not totally freaking out! Although I wanted to hear the heartbeat, your comments yesterday helped me massively. Thank you 🙏 xx

Hi lovely ☺️ I hope you are doing well 🤗 I was the exact same and it wasn’t until about 24 weeks I started to feel anything other than some random flutters, I had my placenta at the front so think that contributed a little to me not feeling anything as it was cushioning the kicks. They also say it’s a bit later for first babies before we feel the kicks. Defo speak to your midwife though if you are concerned at all! That’s what they are there for 👌🏻 I also did private scans throughout to reassure me and could see baby kicking away on the screen, even though I couldn’t feel it, which relaxed me a tiny bit. Sending love 💕 xx
Thank you for replying. I know I’m worrying but I can’t help it 🙄. My placenta is at the back so it was implied that I would feel the kicking sooner rather than later. Now I’m freaking out a bit 🤦♀️. I’ve also had a few private scans but I only had my 20 week scan 2 weeks ago and all was fine. Think I’ll just drop the midwife a message just in case! Thanks lovely xx
Yeah absolutely no harm in checking in with her. I had my consultant scan and check heartbeat etc. every 4 weeks after my 20 week scan and private ones in between and I still worried right up until my little one was in my arms it’s totally understandable xx 🤗
Ahh that’s good to know that you were checked regularly. Makes me worry less about chasing. Thanks for letting me know xx
If in doubt call the hospital / go there and ask for a scan. They always would rather be safe than sorry. I did with my son. All will most likely be fine but it will give you peace of mind. Let us know how you get on x
Thank you. I have spoken to my midwife and she said to pop to the hospital in the morning if the situation is the same. I feel better having made contact with someone so we’ll see how we get on. Thanks a lot for the message xx
Fingers crossed everything is okay, around the 21-26 week mark my little one became a right pain and got herself into the tightest ball between my pelvic bones that she didn’t kick for all that time, thankfully she worked out she didn’t fit there any longer after 26 weeks and went head down, I’ve never been so relieved to be kicked in the ribs, as it’s been a fortnight since your last scan contact the midwife and you might be referred for another growth scan or Doppler scan to check baby’s blood supply and cord, best of luck x
Oh goodness me, poor thing and poor you! Glad she resolved it herself! I’ve spoken to my midwife this morning and I’m going to head to the hospital in the morning for a check if nothings changed. I had a Doppler check a week ago but currently that feels like a lifetime away!! Thanks a lot for the message xx
I don’t mind you asking at all. The midwife told me to wait until tomorrow as I’ll be 22 weeks tomorrow. So I’ll head there in the morning if nothing’s changed. I feel better already having got a plan to be honest so I think I’ll be ok to wait 😉. X
Ok ❤️I had the same at 22 weeks (but with anterior placenta) and went straight to the hospital without waiting as I was going insane lol Also wanted to say….when you go, if it takes a while for them to find the heartbeat don’t freak out (like I did!) as baby is still small and sometimes hiding… all ended up ok for me so I’m sure all is ok with you too! Xxx
Hopefully will be fine. Feel a bit silly as they only checked the heartbeat a week ago but you know what the anxiety is like so we have to live with it and get checked accordingly! Hopefully everything fine xx
Please don’t feel silly it’s absolutely normal!!! I’m 30+4 and went to the hospital 10 days ago because of reduced movements…turns out she was totally fine and kicking like crazy, but I just couldn’t feel her! We got to trust our mother’s instinct (and start practicing it lol) and there’s no point in waiting around suffering with anxiety….IVF has already taken enough from us! Plus, we pay for the NHS so 😉xxxx
They are never going to think you’re silly, I had multiple episodes of reduced movement which actually resulted in being induced at 38 weeks and daily CTGs in the fortnight leading up and scans weekly during my third trimester, but mine was an extreme case of lazy baby, every time I went in I’d be so apologetic as baby was always fine and I felt like a time waster but every single midwife I saw told me I wasn’t a time waster and they’d rather me come in and be told everything’s fine than stay at home and something be wrong - hate to break it to you but the anxiety doesn’t go away, I thought I’d be fine once she was born, turns out you find new things to stress about like how much boob or bottle they’re having and the colour of their poo 😂 I have never been so obsessed with somethings poo in my life! x
😂. No I don’t suppose the anxiety does go away! Probably set up for life now!! I’ll hopefully be worrying about poo soon! Thanks so much for the reassurance. Xx
Hi hifer! Hope you’re doing well! Just to add my 2 pennies lol I’m 24 weeks and only justttt starting to feel the little man move a bit more than before and it still is feeling like bubbles to me. I have an anterior placenta and went to the hospital a few weeks ago as I was stressing. To reassure me they checked heartbeat which was fine but did a super quick ultrasound and I could see him kicking and punching me. The doctor who saw me also said not to worry, I should feel gradual increased movements but it only becomes more noticeable at 28 weeks. So I’m (im)patiently waiting to the end of this month to hopefully feel a bit more! Hope your mind is put at lease tomorrow and I’m sure you have nothing to worry about. The stress never ends xxx
Thanks so much, that actually makes me feel so much better. Glad all well with you and thanks so much for the response. The stress literally never ends!! Xx
No worries, I’m really glad it helped to put you at ease. ☺️ Let me know how today goes!! Also I’ve been woken up this morning with this guy kicking me - never been so happy (and also bloody finally!!!) it is hard not to compare to others but everyone is different and you’ll be feeling your little bub very soon indeed xx
With my first I didn't feel anything till about 24/28 weeks, it mainly felt like popcorn popping or bubbling in my tummy and not anything like the 'kicking' I was expecting, more like a bit of weird gas. It definitely didn't feel like proper movements till much further on. With my second I'm able to pick out the movements a bit more, I'm 24+5 now though and baby is starting to move now and in more of a pattern, I still don't really notice any movements when I'm busy, I notice it the most after I've sat down after dinner.
Midwives would definitely rather check you over if you feel movement had reduced though to what is normal for you, because they'd rather be wrong than you not go and there be something wrong.
Thanks for getting back to me. Interesting to hear about your experiences. Yes I guess I’ve had a bit of ‘bubbling’ but that’s it! I’ll see how I’m doing in the morning. Thank you xx
I have a posterior placenta, at all the scans the baby was so super wriggly (we had to have extra ones they could ever measure anything!!) but yet didn’t feel anything till 23weeks 5 days. I was beginning to get in a panic but it says to contact at 24 weeks so I was waiting for that - I’ve felt it about ever 5 mins since the first one!!
Thanks so much for confirming. We have a super wriggly one too and yet I can’t feel her like you! I feel a lot better after peoples responses today so am not freaking out anymore! X
Glad to see everything turned out okay. My little on is now ten months. My first (an d only) after years of ivf , numerous scans and emergency c section at 36 weeks followed by neonatal intensive care. Really anxious time as I felt a few really stron kicks at about 20 weeks and barely anything then Until 26 weeks. Didn’t know what to expect or whether little flutters were the baby but midwife and hospital were great all the way through. Sure all will turn out okay for you, just keep asking the midwife to check heartbeat for you they are there to support you. I insisted mine keep checking for heartbeat and it was really reassuring. Good luck.
Great to hear all was well at your scan. Am at a similar stage in my IVF pregnancy, and find the movement is varying day to day (but thankfully just enough most days to let me know he’s doing ok!)Take care x
