I am likely to be made redundant within the next month. I am currently 16 weeks so will be around 20 weeks at that point.
I am applying for jobs but feel very aware of my growing bump and general tiredness already being an my feet! I feel anxious about telling an employer in fear of not getting the job but also anxious if i keep it a secret and then having to have the conversation if I am offered a job.
I know employers shouldnt discriminate against pregnant women but lets be honest I imagine they do, ideally I only need a temp job for 3 months and then would go on mat leave anyway.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? I am also looking into mat allowance as I will not be eligible for statutory mat pay.
Any similar experiences and stories of hope would be much appreciated!
Oh no. I completely feel your pain. I've just been through the same thing. I found out I was pregnant in my redundancy consultation period. I would consider telling your employer.. as legally they can't discriminate against you. If you explain that in any new job you'd not be entitled to SMP you might even be able to negotiate a bigger refundancy package. As far as I'm aware employers claim for SMP so they'd only need to keep you on for a few more months. I'd already found out I was losing my role so applied for everything else going internally and ended up getting something else at a lower pay grade... it was an incredibly stressful time though. Made it very hard to stay positive about the pregnancy.. good luck, I hope it all works out xx
Thank you for your advice, my situation feels a bit more tricky as my company is going into liquidation so chances it wont be around in march (when i can go on mat leave). Im not sure how i can challenge the stat pay but i will certainly try! If i can somehow stick it out /transfer to another store until feb i think im entitled to the stat pay but still not sure what that looks like and how they would pay it if they are going under!! Starting to feel so stressed by everything!
Well done for getting a new role, i need to stat positive it will work out somehow! X
Thank you yes iv had a chat with them but was hard for then to give ne an answer as i dont have exact leave date. 15 weeks will be mid Feb so it may be possible to try and stay on as long as poss and transfer to a different store. I work in retail so closing all the stores i work in down! Just depends which ones close first!
I'm so sorry that you're going through this at the moment, I know how unbelievably stressful it is but everything will work out in the end. I found out I was being made redundant a couple of weeks before finding out I was pregnant, I won't finish work until the end of the year when I'm 16 weeks but I'm very conscious of not being able to get a job as I get further along. I had every intention of applying for any job that was half suitable before the 12 week point but with the tiredness and intense nausea all day, every day and trying to get my current (busy) job done, I've just not had the energy. I figure it's a very unusual year and more and more people will be in this situation so although employers may not be thrilled, there will be other people thrilled that there's a mat leave gap to fill.
Wishing you lots of luck and hope that it doesn't go the way of redundancy in your current job. Xx
Thank you, there must be so many people going through similar things! I totally understand how you must be feeling too. Luckily i was on furlough during weeks 8-12 of my pregnancy which i was so thankful for as i felt awful and could barely get oit of bed! Let alone think about applying for new jobs!Wishing you all the best in your job search too!x
What is the reason of redundancy? Is it just yourself or are there other people in the same position as you going through redundancy as well? It will be hard to find something at the moment but it all depends if your pregnancy is visible by that point? If it isn't I would cover it until I get the job personally. I know they shouldn't discriminate but hey we all know they do. I had similar issue when I was pregnant and I was considered for redundancy. The most interesting here was that as soon as I started getting all documents together and requesting in writing all reasons why I'm the one to go they let me stay surprisingly. So maybe it's not all done in your case yet?
Thank you for your advice, i work for a well known department store which is going into liquidation so could be gone by end of Jan or could be longer, all a bit up in the air!!Im torn between waiting it out as long as poss but be at the risk that i cant get anotyer job so being unemployed for a few months, or jumping ship early whilst i can cover the bump and cross thar bridge a bit later.
I had an interview yesterday which went well and includes 6 months training so part of me felt guilty if i did get it knowing i would be on mat leave within that time!
I think i just need to be selfish and think of myself and try not to stress!
Bless you. In that case you cannot avoid redundancy. Be selfish and don't tell anyone. You can always say that you needed to go thorough all scans etc to be sure that baby is OK first. Don't worry, take care of yourself and don't feel guilty you do what you need to do. At the end of the day everyone looks after their own business and there is very few people that look out for others. Good luck!x
You may still have time yet don't panic a few month ago they were considering a redundancy for my job but in the end they kept me on I'm 31 week pregnant people left voluntarily.the thing you must worry about with Covid is more people are wary when someone is pregnant maybe not all but I had to fight to stay home not sure what job you do but midwife advises you to work from home at 28 week even though we are told we are not at risk we actually are very vulnerable I fought to be refurloughed because my midwife advised it as we don't know how Covid can affect us if we catch it you don't have much time left to be getting a new job but you might be elegible to ma depends how many hours you work also won't you get dedundancy pay don't leave yet or you will miss out I think you can get ma from 21 week so if you get sack you can claim ma almost straight away
