Accidentally ate ice cream while pregnant!

Hi all

Please can someone advise me? I ate gelato ice cream from a local dessert shop and just checked online it’s unclear whether it’s allowed or not due to the risk of salmonella or listeria. Does anyone know if gelato ice cream from ice cream parlours are okay while pregnant? I’m panicking!!! Thank you x

It’s fine so long as it’s pasteurised ice cream, egg free or the eggs used have the British lion stamp. I don’t think whipped ice cream is safe. Either way, if it’s been a while, try not to worry. I also ate gelato ice cream many times during my pregnancy and was fine! Not much you can do now.

You'll need to check with the ice cream parlour whether their ice cream is pasteurised or not, the risk is extremely low even if it's not pasteurised but if you're very concerned contact your midwife for advice and reassurance.

When I make homemade ice cream or gelato the eggs are cooked.

You essentially make a hot custard first and then cool it before churning.

Yeah your allowed eggs as long as they have the lion stamped you can't get salmonella from that
