Possible miscarriage - worried

I have just been for an emergency prenatal scan (mainly because I was scared I had an ectopic pregnancy due to some later pain I kept experiencing). The doctor said that my pregnancy is not ectopic however he was concerned of a miscarriage as my fetus was way too small for the weeks I’ve been calculated! The nhs said I was 9 weeks pregnant however the fetus seems to be only the size of a 6 weeks! I did mention that my ovulation and conception dates were much more likely to be around 6 weeks ago and not 9 weeks like they keep saying (I know my exact conception date thanks to the app I’m using). The doctor said it was possible that they have miscalculated the weeks and that indeed my fetus is only 6weeks old! I now have a follow up appointment in one week and if the fetus has not grown then they will need to do an operation to take it out and clean my womb! I’m so scared! Thinking how is it possible that I had a miscarriage but I’m still feeling all the pregnancy pains such as nausea , tiredness, sore breasts etc! Is this normal?

Hi I'm really sorry that you're going through this, miscarriage is horrid to go through. I had a missed miscarriage a couple of years ago and didn't know until my 12 week scan and had the surgical process carried out.

In terms of your weeks of pregnancy

your weeks pregnant are not calculated by your conception or ovulation date, it goes from the date of last missed period date, so even though you won't have been pregnant for the first couple of weeks that's how it is worked out. If your last missed period calculates as 9 weeks ago that's what they would use to measure against for the size of the foetus. It's not always exact and hopefully next week at your scan it will have grown, wishing you all the best xx

Hi Seb, Thanks for your reply! was the surgical removal painful?! I’m not looking forward to that and wondering if I could go the pills way?! ( they offered that too)

I went for the surgery as I didn't want to wait for it to be over naturally or with the pills.

I had the manual vacuum aspiration, which was uncomfortable but not painful, they gave me pills to take in the morning before I went and during it they have me local anaesthetic and gas and air.

Afterwards I didn't have too much pain or bleeding and my next period wasn't especially heavy or painful. After my first period we started trying again and I was lucky to fall pregnant that time and go on to have a healthy pregnancy xx

Thank you for this! I think losing the fetus is shit enough but having to go through the removal Procedure as well is proper upsetting ... and if I haven’t gone for an early scan I wouldn’t have known until week12! Also ... I have spent the last 6 weeks feeling absolutely shit (nausea, tiredness, not able to eat properly or even exercise and now discovering it was all for nothing!!! How frustrating ) ... just such a waste of time and energy! :( and will have to start all over ... but happy to hear you had a happy ending hopefully in a a few months time it will all be a forgotten episode!

It is bloody shit, but you never know, next week it may have grown and everything is OK.

However if not, it is really shit. After my scan I went and got wine, pate, camembert and anything else on the pregnancy do not eat list and I went nuts! I was furious but found that helped me get through it. We'd been trying for a while so I did also take it as a bit of a positive that although it hadn't worked, at least I could get pregnant.

For me the removal procedure was better than waiting at home not knowing when it would start. The nurses that looked after me were lovely too and really helped make a crap situation better.

Ahahah love the wine and cheese sesh!!! Will deff have a very similar reaction and just drink my sorrow away! The cherry on the top is that we were actually meant to be on our holiday in turkey next week and obv had to cancel that now :( not the worse part of this but still a bummer as well! Lol

That absolutely sucks! Stupid Covid! I really hope that your scan next week is fine but if not I will join you on an online glass of wine and say arseholes to you world! Xx

I'm really sorry you are having to go through this. The nhs dates will be from first day of your last period and only work if your cycle is 28 days long. If your cycle is longer you probably ovulate later and it would be less weeks than they expect from period. If like me your cycle is shorter it means I ovulate earlier than expected and both of mine have been bigger than the nhs predicted. It is just a guess until the dating scan. Pretty much the only way to know is to wait till next week which is really rubbish. I hope everything goes ok for you.

Thank you Claire! I have a tiny bit of hope still because my cycle is super long! I actually know my exact day of ovulation and I know it was almost 4 weeks after the beginning of my period, so when they say I should be 9 weeks I only count 6! However what I’m not sure about is if they take that into consideration when deciding the baseline measurements 🤷‍♀️!! Oh well I suppose I just have to wait! I’d say that because I started feeling physically better in the last few days I’m more prone to believe that I have actually lost it and I’m not pregnant anymore.... But who knows! It will be a LOOONG week!!

Just as an update if anyone is interested! Unfortunately the fetus was dead and I had to have SMM last week! Was in loads of pain and had horrible bleeding for a bit! Also my stomach has not been ok since then! Have loads of cramps whatever I drink or eat a bit more... it’s getting better on the bleeding side but the cramps are still bad! Having another check next week to make sure everything is ok!

It’s called a missed misscarrige try not to worry for now as they can’t be sure I had a missed one at 13 week and just so you know it’s your choice how you deliver you can give birth naturally but hopefully it doesn’t come to that and they can get dates wrong they get mine wrong every time
