my baby boy has just turned 12 weeks today and im abit worried as hes only drink 2-3 ounces on a feed but he is feeding every 2-3 hours

i was just wondering if any knows if thats normal

Are you feeding him when he wakes up rather than when he’s tired?

Have you tried a faster flow teat?

If he’s putting on weight and has plenty of wet/dirty nappies there’s no reason to worry. At 12 weeks I would expect them to feed every 3 hours anyway

were getting one dirty nappie every 3-4 days hes putting weigh on but hes got a vsd heart condition so everything is abit of a worry

I can only imagine, you must on a knife edge with everything. Maybe speak to your HV for some advice and reassurance?

Make sure you’re feeding him when he’s awake and hungry. Offer him the bottle but don’t keep persevering to make him finish it (imagine how annoyed you would get)

Was he early? Is he small? He might just not have a big appetite.

hes was 6 days early and weighed 6.8

So not early and not small. Try a fast teat. Try feeding when he wakes rather than when he’s tired to see if he wants more. If not, try not to worry. Sounds like he’s doing great

You're doing great! Is he bottle-fed baby - as you can measure so well how many Oz he's eating?

If I were you I probably would ask a HV to weigh the baby,just to make sure he's following his growth curve and if it's normal to poop every few days. (My boy was exclusively breastfed and he pooed a lot :8 poos a day was a norm. Now he's 2 years old and we're still on 3 poops a day. But I suppose, he's having more poops than a usual baby 🙈)

I think noone can tell exactly how many poops a day each person should have - each baby & toddler and adult is different. Different pooping pattern.

Some of my friends breastfed babies did 1 poop in 7-10 days : which is normal for a breastfed baby. Mine did lots, but still jumped from 9th percentile to nearly 50th, and now being 2years old he's very average weight and height - even regardless that he was born little and light at full term. Some babies eat big portions - mine did most times very little. Whilst some babies at the playgroup had 6-8oz of formula: mine hardly finished his 2oz breastmilk bottle.

Even as adults : I go to toilet for Nr2 1-3x a day, partner only in the morning, friend goes every other day...

☀️Normal Range: 3 per day to 1 every 2 days. Once children are on normal table foods, their stool pattern is like adults.

Also we eat lots of fruit, berries that grow in our garden, which takes no time to digest, once he's outside the house - he's at some berries bush eating them (goosberries, redcurrants, rasberries, whiteberries) or we eat lots of cherries from the tree or strawberries . Now blueberries are ripe in the Forrests, so we eat them lots. I suppose that's also the reason he poops so often. Well - at least he's not straini g and not having loose poop, so neither I nor HV is concerned.

Eating that often sounds normal to me, does baby have any other symptoms - reflux, slow weight gain, mucus nappies? X

Taking a long time to feed plus being sick (reflux) after each feed would make me suspect baby has a tongue tie. This makes it difficult for them to form a seal around the bottle and take air in, which comes back out after the feed bringing the milk up with it. Don’t worry it can be sorted easily if baby is tied - if you can afford to, having him checked by a private practitioner is a lot quicker than NHS, but it needs to be a tongue tie practitioner who checks as health visitor, GP etc don’t have the right training (a few told me my son had not tie and turned out to be a 100% tie). Have a look on the tongue tie practitioner website for one near you. If you’re up north I can highly recommend milk matters in Huddersfield they are amazing. Prices vary from 100-200 ish. Have a look on milk matters page on Facebook there is a lot of good information and examples of good/bad latch on to a bottle so may help when feeding your little one. If you decide to ask GP to refer you via NHS, don’t let them fob you off or tell you it doesn’t need doing as baby is bottle fed. Tongue tie causes lots of problems as it affects the whole body (I am speaking as a tongue tied adult!) and clearly something isn’t quite right with your little one at the moment. My boy was severely tongue tied - though he ate well and put plenty of weight on. But, as it was the most severe case and could affect his speach later on: we got a referral - we waited in NHS queue for 1 week only (just needed to go not to the closest hospitals 10 min drive or 15 min but rather one hours drive)

Nightmare started when his reflux kicked in at age of probably 6 weeks or so: all that spitting up and crying every evening for few hours. No medication touched it, and it got slightly better and finished when solids were introduced.

Aw wow that’s good it was a 6/7 week wait where I am!! My boy had horrendous reflux too but his weight gain was very slow, think my milk supply mustn’t have been stimulated enough because of the tie. It’s shocking how many go undiagnosed, doctors are too quick to throw reflux meds at you without actually investigating WHY baby is refluxing- it’s a symptom not a diagnosis - shocking that doctors aren’t following NICE guidelines when it comes to this xx

Mine had also a severe lip tie 🙈 big meaty wedge between his front teeth joined with the lip 🙈

Yes things got a lot better once his tie was snipped! Though it did keep reattaching but eventually sorted with a few sessions of osteo and having it lifted by the practitioner. I’m amazed you were able to have the lip tie treated as most I’ve seen won’t do them as they don’t believe it affects breastfeeding... they just wait for the child to tear it themselves which seems bizarre x

Glad it did improve!

Few days ago my son managed to fall and detach/tear his lip tie 🙈 so he reversed his lip tie by himself... Hopefully I'll be able to properly and more easily brush his teeth once it will heal - as up to now I needed to hold his upper lip to have access to his teeth and he hated it. Glad everything has sorted out for both of us!x

My daughter does the same she has only just gone to 4-5 ounses at 6 months. Dont worry as long as he feeding and gaining thats fine x

No some babies just like a little often. My son was completely different and was on 7-8 ounzes by now so i panicked abit. But she is gaining weight slowly and happy so not worried now x

I think you have to trust your gut and ask the hv if not sure. My lg is 10wks tomorrow and was 3 weeks early she used to feed every 1-2 hours when i was breast feeding I now bottle feed and it’s gone from every 2 hours to every 3 to every 3-4 hours now. I went up a teat from size 1 to 2 and after a couple of challenging days where she was getting used to it it’s so much better and the feeds are quicker as I think she needed a fast flow and now she drinks lots more at each feed and is more likely to drink the whole bottle however I also think she knows when she has had enough

And when she looks satisfied. Their bowel habits also change as well and my hv said they don’t always go poo every day if she hasn’t gone by

4/5 day I would call the hv. Also if spitting up loads that’s natural but also make sure they have burped enough as that
