Has anyone had experience of the cvs test please? I don’t know what to expect and understand the risk is 1 percent for miscarriage but I don’t even know if I’m high risk.

Cvs test advise please
Make sure they explain to you exactly why they are insisting you do this. My understanding is that this test is not compulsory x
It’s to check for downs Edwards and another syndrome
They never said how thick the fluid was
I’m just hoping tomorrow with the scan in more depth it’s all ok
They should have done a scan and blood tests already. Did they say what your risk was? This is normally given as 1 in 10 or 1 in 300 depending on your risk.
If you having CVS the scan will be for that in general rather than looking into more detail. CVS/amnio would only be offered if you were high risk tbh
Did you sign consent yet? Whoever is doing the procedure should explain everything to you. However if I were you I write down all the questions you have and ask. Just ask and they will.explain if you've not understood something or maybe something wasnt explained properly first time round.
They can use a non invasive/non risky test (combining scans and blood tests) to check the percentage level risk/likelihood of your baby having a genetic condition like Down syndrome. This is usually done before cvs is suggested and it’s your choice whether you want to go ahead with a cvs test. CVS or an amniocentesis are the only tests that give a 100% accurate result but the blood test/scan combination is said to be reasonably accurate now (but not certain). Of course it depends on what you thoughts/feelings would be if you discovered there was a high risk.
Have you been told you HAVE to have the cvs test? Have they done other checks first to calculate the risk of your baby having a chromosomal condition? Personally, if the answer is no to these questions I would be asking for more explanation before going ahead so you can make an informed choice about cvs.
Good luck
The non invasive harmony test isnt always offered free. Might have to pay for it privately depends on hospital. Still good thing to discuss with the person of course.
I had my tests and scan at Kings College Hospital, it was their ‘screening test’ not the Harmony test as that was something I was told I would be offered, instead of the cvs/amniocentesis, if the result had shown I was high risk.
I believe the Harmony test costs around £450 if you go privately, so definitely not a cheap option.
My bump had a 7mm nuchal translucency, so they didn't bother with risk assessment for me. Quite honesty I couldn't cope with the worry waiting till enough weeks had passed for amnio so cvs was a no brainer for me.
The risk is tiny, and honestly, not much over what it would be at this time in your pregnancy anyway. If you rest the day or two after, that's best.
If you want to know so as to decide if you wish to keep the baby with very serious, potentially life limiting genetic issues, then do it.
It didn't hurt any more than giving blood (and only for less than a second), was more like strong period cramps during the collection of cells. Plus you get to know the gender this early if you want to, so great for nursery planning!
Hi, I had CVS test done and it was not painful at all. All you need to do is to relax your tummy muscles
