High sugar levels gestational diabetes test negative

Hi ladies,

I wonder if anyone has any advice?

Every time I see my midwife I take a urine sample, and around 2 months ago a high amount of sugar was found in my samples. Since then every time I have an appointment high sugar is found. A month ago I had a glucose test and my results came back as negative with very low sugar. This really confused me and my midwife can’t really explain it. I saw the midwife again today and I had high sugar so I’ve been referred for another glucose test.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Is there a chance you have a UTI (urinary tract infection)? That can sometimes make sugars and proteins visible in the urine. Of course be careful with your diet, but I'd recommend booking in with the GP if you're feeling very anxious about it.

Thanks Lyla I will book and appointment to be on the safe side. I don’t think I have an infection but worth asking the question.

Are you eating before you take the urine sample? The only time I've ever had glucose in my urine was because I let myself get really, really hungry then had a jam sandwich, which caused my sugar levels to spike.

Hi hmarkson no I purposely make sure I haven’t eaten before the sample and eat dinner the night before earlier then usual. So I just don’t get how my glucose test was negative?

Maybe that's why then, there is no need to stop eating before you do a urine sample, just eat and drink as you normally would. You only need to fast for the glucose tolerance test.

Your midwife told you to not eat anything before doing a urine sample? Are you sure you didn't misunderstand and she was just referring to the GTT? Whenever I have a midwife appointment I normally take a urine sample when I get there, and have never been told to not eat or drink beforehand. There is no need for you to fast before a normal urine test that is part of a regular midwifery check-up.

Yes she asks me if I ate every time. The first time there was sugar she asked if I’d had breakfast. I said yes and she told me that’s what was showing up and not to eat next time. I absolutely dread seeing her I feel like a naughty child when she tells me the result.

When you had the two hour glucose test did you make sure you sat and did nothing? If you exercise walk ++ you could burn off the excess glucose and get a false negative. When I has mine I was advised I had to sit in the department for the two hours whilst waiting

No I didn’t walk too much I was told not to. Just toilet trips

Thanks for your advice everyone. I have my glucose test on Wednesday followed by a gp appointment. Is it true that if I’m positive up until my date or have sugar in my urine still I’m likely to need a c - section?

I'm not sure that's true, as far as I'm aware, if you have had a glucose tolerance test and it's negative there is no further action taken. If it's positive and you have gestational diabetes then you can read up about it online - I think there is only a slightly increased risk of a c-section if the baby is big, but you will be expected to adjust your diet to manage your sugar levels. Have you thought about seeing a GP instead of your midwife? If it's your first pregnancy there are a few check-ups which should be done by the GP - check your blue folder. You might be able to get some more info from them. You can also request a different midwife if you're not getting on with your current one.

Thanks hmarkson my midwife said even if this is negative I’ll be referred to a clinic which will help me manage my sugars. Were I live the GP’s have nothing to do with pregnancy’s they refer you to the hospital who sets you up with a midwife. We don’t have blue folders either. But I’ll be sure to ask lots of questions when I’m at the hospital
