My advice would be to buy bits and pieces as you go along. Don’t leave it all to the last minute as there’s every chance you’ll be too tired or going shopping in the final trimester can’t be uncomfortable.

Probably best to write a list of everything you need (lists are available on bounty, Emma’s Diary or pampers websites) and keep it with you. Car seats, Prams and cots etc usually have to be ordered and can take a while to arrive. I purchased all mine online as we got better value. Mine took 2-3 months to arrive and I’m glad I purchased when I did. The smaller items like clothing, nappies and sterilisers I bought when I saw them on offer (baby events) or reduced in sales as when you add it all up, it can get very expensive.

If I have forgotten anything, I will just have to ask my husband or parents to purchase as and when required until I’m ready to go out myself as today is currently my due date!

Thanks for advice do you no any good sites to shop online that are safe

Sign up to Bounty and Emma’s Diary and they will send you offers. We bought a decent car seat, pram, push chair combo package which came with a whole host of other stuff (muslin cloths, waterproof pram covers, foot muff, changing bag & mat etc). It was a brand which friends of ours had recommended so we feel like we will be in safe hands.

You could also look on Gumtree and Facebook selling sites local to you as people are always selling their items at great prices. If you buy a cot this way, the advice is to purchase a brand new mattress.

We stayed away from buying nursery furniture, other than a cot. I have friends who bought it all and now 2 years down the line want rid of it in favour of standard/adult sized drawers and cupboards etc as it’s all too small.

I hope this helps.

You're past the 'danger' zone now hun. We purchased our travel system at 4 months as we could pay monthly and it works out better for us. Plus the shop we're buying from gives you all your money back if anything happened to baby. I wouldn't buy clothes just yet unless there's some sales around xx

We bought our travel system at a baby fare. Totally do not recommend that. That was at 5-6 months I think, but we requested a later delivery. We saw it in the sales at 7 months and were gutted. So I'd say to keep your eyes peeled for sales on big items like that as many places will take time to deliver or allow you can pick a delivery date closer to your due date. These do take up a lot of room

I bought my baby's first wardrobe (essential baby grows, various long/short sleeve vests, bibs, socks, a few cardigans) and bedding/muslin at 7 months in the Jan sales. So look out for sale periods closer to your due date and if you have room, buy a range of sizes.

Agreed with other posts... one thing go easy on the baby clothes!! They're very cute and tempting but people tend to give you loads with first baby! And they'll grow out quickly... one second wire the newborn outfits for a week by 2m she was out if her 0-3!

Totally agree re clothing. I was initially told I would have a small baby so bought a load of newborn vests & baby grows (up to 7.5lb) but it’s clear that my baby will be at least 8lb - this is only an estimate so will have to wait and see. I will be gutted that he or she won’t be able to wear any but no one can tell you for sure what they will weigh until they arrive! Take it easy buying clothes unless you buy 3 months plus.

So if i was to buy any clothes do you think i should get just vests and get it new born size and one bit bigger size

in reply toJessie25

It’s really difficult to know for sure exactly everything you require for your little ones arrival. I have struggled with this myself as I still don’t yet know if I have gotten it right - time will tell!

I would only buy a few things in the smaller sizes to keep you going for a day or 2 until you know the weight/size of your baby. If you need more, you’ll have to ask your partner, parents or friends for things nearer the time or at least once your baby has arrived.

I have been told by lots of people that you’ll be given a lot of gifts but as I haven’t yet had my baby, I’m not keen to rely on gifts - I don’t want to assume anything.

If my baby is less than 7.5lb, great, if not I’m going to have to put them all on Ebay - never worn, only washed once! Baby & children’s clothing do sell quite well on the site so at least I may get something back to help pay for the next size I will need.

Also second hand can be great for things depending on your budget. We got our swing for £60 which you can still buy new for £170. Enjoy it all, I loved getting everything sorted.

Thanks i must look at second hand stuff aswell sounds good also do you think its safe to get few clothes now for baby as im 4 months x

I got a few bits. I did wait mainly until after the 20 weeks scan, then you know everything is good pretty much. If you want to spread the cost maybe save a bit until then? You mustn’t be too far off? I would just do what you’re happy with. You do get loads of clothes but I also enjoyed getting things myself. It’s something you’re only going to get to do a few times. As long as you’re not breaking the bank get things. Most people bought us 3-6 months so maybe stear clear of those. We had to go out and buy 0-1 month stuff when he was born because he was too small for 0-3. Also baby sleeping bags for when they are a month or so, depending on babies size, are amazing. I’m quite jealous you get to do all this. Terrible because my little boy is on 4 months! X

Do you now what will be done on my first apoitment with the obsatrition also do you have to get i internals done all time just its my first pregency so curious lol

PoppyC38 profile image
PoppyC38 in reply toJessie25

The first internal I had was when I was in labour. I guess it would vary depending on your pregnancy. If it’s straight forward then you probably won’t. What are you seeing an obstetrician for? Are you in the UK? X

PoppyC38 in reply toJessie25

There are a couple of things. There is round ligament pain which is everything stretching. I had it throughout to be honest it’s just uncomfortable. There is also a thing called lightening crouch (beautiful name!) I never had this but it more vaguna type pain. But if you’re ever worried ring your Midwife. X

Hey Jessie25 I’m 4 months too. I’m going to wait until I know if I’m having a boy or a girl, my scans in March. Then we’re going to spend the Easter holidays shopping for the pram, cot and painting the baby’s room. Having heard what the ladies have said I think I’ll buy the newborn essentials and look at a few sites for second hand clothes for the newborn stage. Good luck xx

in reply toHopful85

Also think about getting yourself some maternity/nursing clothing. I’m now at the stage that I’m even bursting out of these 😞 I can’t face buying anymore so will make do until my baby arrives (which should’ve been Wednesday!).

You can purchase belly bands which are great initially when you’re inbetween sizes but I found long vests invaluable as you can wear anything over the top without exposing your tummy.

Hi hun i have some maternity jeans size 10 and i still have room in them at stomach when do you reckon my stomach will get bigger im 4 months xxxxx

Hopful85 in reply toJessie25

Is this your first pregnancy? It’s my first pregnancy and I’ve just started to show in the last week. My bumps just popped out of no where lol. With first time pregnancies it takes a while till you start showing so I wouldn’t worry. I’m still wearing my normal jeans but they’re quite tight xxx

Hopful85 in reply toJessie25

I think it is but speak to your midwife if your worried about something you could even call 111 if you want some advice and can’t speak to your GP. I get a dull ache too and have done for quite a few months, I have my second midwife appoint tomorrow so will ask her but I’ve read it’s normal too. Probably your expanding uterus xxx
