Hello I would like to know your experience on this, my baby is still too small for this but when my other child was a baby 10 years ago I started giving him the cereals at 4 months and then at 6 I started the soup and otger food gradually but now I see they say we should only start at 6 but for me its too long to wait

Hey, just out of interest how old is your baby now?

I started weaning my son at nearly 5 months as he was drinking so much milk to try and satisfy his hunger he was being sick at the bedtime feed - even health visitor agreed it was right.

I think it totally depends on the baby and your reasons for doing it.

My friends has two small children, was was weaned at 4.5 months but the other quite happily weaned later at 6 months.

See how LO goes xx

Ahh still teeny weeny!! Think just a case of seeing how she gets on nearer the time and what you feel she needs xx

I started my son on baby rice at 4 months (says from 4m on box) then veg at 5.5m

Now at 7m he is loving real food and enjoying new tastes and textures. Many people are trying baby lead weaning. This was nit for me due to the choking risks but it may be something that you want to look into for your baby.

Like 2ndtimelucky says, all babies are different and some can thrive on milk for 6 months, but others are ready sooner. I wouldn't do it before 4m but some are advised to for medical reasons, low birth weight/not gaining much weight/mouth disorders etc so it can't do that much damage! Xx

My opinion on weaning is to try & follow your baby's signals.

My Lil one will be 4 months on Tuesday & I'd say by the time she was 3 & a half months she was clearly not satisfied by only milk.

So now what i do is buy Lil bags of fruit from as a & make her a medley of fruity purée with Lil tasters of baby rice & etc....

As already said every child is different & you'll know when she's ready to try certain foods but there's also nothing wrong with giving her a taster / very minimal amount of baby food.

You just need to do some research on the pros and cons. Also depends on your baby like the others have said. You can do damage to their internal systems if you wean too early it can also lead to other problems so just be aware. It has been linked to crones and IBS.

I myself am frustrated my baby was clearly ready to wean at 5 months so we rang HV for advise and they said NO 6 months! I have not been able to speak to be assigned HV about it yet. My baby is practically snatching the food of our plates. Still next week she is 6 months and then we will start. As my partners family suffers from crones and IBS we didn't really want to increase her risk of getting these. But she is clearly ready which is frustrating we just wanted some support.

As you maybe able to tell I myself am slightly confused about the subject so we have just followed the advise of the HV.

It does depend on the baby..I started my son on porridge at 4 months and hav introduced purees slowly..he will b 6 months in a couple of weeks. .he also has smaller chunks of foods such as bananas and potato. My hv said it wud b fine as he snatched food out my hand when I saw her..just do it slowly. Back in the day with our parents we were weaned fully at 4 months and we r still alive..I was a little cautious as my bf has coeliac which can b linked to early weaning but hes eaten porridge and been fine so touch wood he is fine xx

I would recommend reading Baby Led Weaning by Gill Rapley as it explains why it's better to wait til baby is ready ie sitting unaided and able to take food to their mouths independently, which for my lo was 5 1/2 months, but as others have said you need to go on what works for you and follow your instincts. I also did the NCT weaning course and it was good to chat to other mums about what they thought.

You can usually borrow the Baby Led Weaning book from the library or a local children's centre, so you don't have to buy it.
