Hello everyone, my little boy has just turned 6 months and I have started trying to wean him. So far it’s not going too well, he seems to hate anything that isn’t milk. I have tried spoon feeding him and he just clamps shut and screams and baby led weaning but nothing ever goes remotely near his mouth. I know it’s early days but I’m just frustrated that he won’t try anything. Does anyone have any advice or tips? Or is it just a matter of time? Many thanks.

Trouble weaning
I haven’t started weaning yet but do you do it when he’s not hungry? My health visitor told me to do it not long after a feed so they don’t get frustrated because they are hungry for milk.
Hope that doesn’t sound patronising I only say this as someone I know had this problem when they started so she changed when she was doing it and it went much better xx
Yes try when he's not too hungry but shouldn't be too full up either. Maybe an hour after a feed x
Baby might just not be ready yet for weaning, my second wasn't so we just left it a few weeks then came back to it. Is he reaching for your food when you eat or is he just not interested
Thank you for your replies, he isn’t reaching for our food but he does watch us eat. I try and feed him mid bottle as I thought if he finished it he might not be hungry then won’t eat the food. That’s probably my mistake... I have tried feeding him after though and he still seems pretty disinterested, most things end up on the floor. Xx
I personally would wait till hes showing signs of wanting what your eating, i found with my second when he was trying to steal food of us he was more inclined to eat himself. We put my second in high chair at the table at dinner time with a few bits of food to mess with on his tray but didnt try to get him to eat it till he started grabbing for our food and then trying to put food to his mouth when at the dinner table
Baby isn't ready yet. 6 months is the minimum recommended age to introduce solids, but if he is showing no interest don't stress. Just hold off and wait until he wants to try again.
Typically baby will be trying to grab at your food when they are ready to try it for themselves.
Try giving milk with any food. For example baby rice or porridge with his normal milk or mashed banana with usual milk so the taste is familiar x
Thank you for this, I’ll give it a shot! x
Don't bother with baby rice, it has almost nil nutritional value and just acts as a filler for their tummies. Porridge can also be very hard for them to digest at such a young age and lead to constipation. Pureed food mixed with breast milk is good to try, just don't force it.
