I'm 5 weeks pregnant. I called the doctors surgery to arrange an appointment. I was told by the receptionist I didn't need to see the doctor

and she booked me a midwife appointment for when I'm 10 weeks. I'm concerned, should I not need to see someone sooner than this? Especially with this being my first baby?

Congratulations!!

Yes unfortunately that is quite normal. If they do see you they don't even do a test! It's weird because it's such a huge thing for us but you don't get seen until 10 weeks! And even then the midwife appt doesn't really do very much, just runs through things you should and shouldn't be doing, working out if you are high risk.

Don't know ow its done in ur side, but seein d doc does nt mk much difference, thi I was able to c my doc wen I was almost 7wks,all dt will be done is to fill ur details n give u a book(can't remember d name nw) n I think a paper info u of ow ur spots will be,so I Dnt tink its too necessary,bt u can stil call bk cos wen I was too book my appt den I told dem I wanted to c d doc...wish u best of luck.xoxo

Hey. that's how it's done, first baby or tenth lol. They just book you in to see a midwife who takes your info and medical history and such. A doctor wouldn't do anything for you anyway and just trust your pregnancy tests. Good luck with it all and congratulations :D x

Thankyou! I was worried as the receptionists at my surgery like to think they are doctors and they are pretty much useless, so I just didnt trust them!! I feel much happier about it now! X

I agree, that's perfectly normal. Took me by surprise too! First midwife appointment was a real disappointment - just form filling. There's lots of info on the NHS Choices website about what you can and can't eat etc. And start taking folic acid if you are not already. Good luck!

My g.p was great had a booking app with them they took blood pressure filled out forms for ur exemption card that gives u free prescriptions and dental treatment... dr surgery's are all different thou so maybe ur midwife app covers all of this, before u go make sure u write down any questions u have. .. congratulations :)

Yep! That's how it us! I didn't se a doc and was just given the midwives number to arrange a booking appointment! I was 10 weeks by the time I saw her! Xx

No you don't need to see your dr. First step is booking in appnt with midwife.
