Cold and Flu Jab...if in doubt...

Hi all, just a quick post to say I really wish I'd had this jab when I was pregnant. I didn't mainly due to my midwife not mentioning it and not really finding the time.

My LO has a really horrible cold and although it's not serious it really is heartbreaking to watch - never mind tiring!

I feel guilty and pretty stupid now for not having it - I def would do things differently if I could xxx

Dnt b hard on urself. .I had the flu jab and my son had a cold a couple of weeks ago. .wasnt too bad but at this time of yr plenty of germs around. Try calpol nasal spray or what I did is when I was having a shower I put my son in bathroom with me and shut the door and the steam frm shower helped a bit. Hope ur LO is btr soon xx

Thanks babymother and ceribean. I'm just glad he's old enough now to have some calpol etc...as he needs it. Will try the shower idea too. Hopefully it won't last too long!

I was told by an armenian woman in the chemist when babies have colds they used butter up their noses! And the pharmacist said yes in her culture they use ghee which works a treat but must admit I'd go with ceribeans advice lol. . Also wet towels over the radiator to put it moisture in the air in the bedroom x

Thanks ladies. He's soldiering on bless him. Selfishly all I can think about is his bedtime routine going out the window! He always naps and sleeps well but here I am with him on my lap for the last 2 hours soothing him whilst sleeping! Any ideas on obviously giving him lots of TLC but keeping the routine of soothing himself? What a cruel, selfish mother I am!!!

Not cruel at all!! Last thing you want is him getting used to been constantly soothed then him wanting that all the time, even when he is better!! I'm guessing he wakes as soon as you move him? Will he settle in his pram being rocked/pushed? Then at least he is in his own space without being on your lap. I'm guessing your pram will lay flat so if he is happy in there it would be safe for him to sleep there in your room rather than the cot/moses (if the pram fits in your room!! Some are huge!! :) lol) then if he does stir you can rock him back to sleep? Xx

So far he's been pretty good but this afternoon he was so tired and kept waking so had him on my lap which bizarrely he doesn't usually like.

Last night he stayed in his Moses basket all night only coming out for his feeds and although his sleep was a bit broken he didn't cry and settled back down. I just feel a bit mean - they look so small and helpless!!

Fingers crossed he does the same tonight and I can keep with routine whilst plenty of cuddles too. Will have the pram ready as a back up!

Aw bless him! Hope he feels better soon. Don't beat yourself up about the jab.....babies get ill, it's inevitable at some stage and it's their body doing it's job fighting off the evil germs lol. I'm dreading the day when James gets a cold. He seemed a bit bunged up this morning but not anymore so not sure....they do seem also helpless when there's something wrong. But trying to get them to keep their self soothing and routines and stuff isn't selfish at all...they will rest better in the long run if they don't rely on you :-) x

The cold virus and the flu virus are very different. Protection from flu would not protect you from cold so don't beat yourself up. Hope he gets better soon. X

in sciencey terms - the flu jab just helps to reinforce your defences and doesnt stop u getting ill. This is because the influenza virus and cold virus cells mutate in each host, so each one is slightly modified as they leave each person they made ill.

Getting a cold is probably a good thing for a baby (in my opinion) as it helps them to strengthen the immune system we, as mothers, gave them at birth. So, while it really is heartbreaking to watch, im sure, this is good for your baby and will make them stronger when they get better, helping them fight off any further contact with flu/cold quicker.

Please dont be upset with yourself, u are doing everything in ur power to help ur little one now and thats amazing. I hope the little chappy gets better really soon and ur nights arent too interrupted (ps it isnt selfish to want that) xx
