I have a deep attachment to the Eastern Caribbean, having lived there for 30 years. I have been following with horror an eruption on St. Vincent, which is being reported by colleagues at the Seismic Research Centre of the University of the West Indies. The destruction is horrific. Though I have written to the volcanologists involved, giving them my best wishes and encouraging them to stay safe, I feel so helpless. At least when Montserrat erupted in 1995 I was able to provide some much needed education and reassurance on neighbouring islands. Now, it feel I can do nothing.

I knew you'd be watching with keen interest BrentW. I have myself, and doubly so now that Barbados is getting a lot of fallout from the ash. For once I'm glad I'm not there, as the ash is inches deep. But first and foremost thinking of all our 'Vincy' friends and wishing them a speedy end to their troubles.
I was both touched and pleased to see that Guyana and Antigua have offered help for evacuees, Callendersgal. When there is a disaster, Caricom comes together.
