Flu Jab Shortages UK now

Has anybody else been told that surgeries can't vaccinate those under 65 years of age now! Thought those with severe or moderate health issues/ problems at risk if contracting Coronavirus would be prioritized?

I am praying that my appointment begin of November is not cancelled! Thinking of you all! Christiane ❤️🙏💉

Boots Pharmacy is the same, bonkers!🤷

With all due respect that's ridiculous!

I decided to bypass my surgery and pay for my jab privately at Boots which I had done yesterday morning.

Well if it carries on like this I shall do the same if surgery should cancel mine, catgirl!🙏

That's strange. I have one every year - I don't formally qualify but my GP lets me have one because of disabilities I have from my brain injury. I was wondering what would happen this year because I have to ask my doctor each year and I am in the over fifties but under 65 category........so I was surprised this morning when I got a text message from the NHS telling me that I could have a free flu jab and saying that I should call my surgery. I rang them straight away and have an appointment in just under two weeks' time.

I wonder if it is different in different areas of the country?

It’s a right old mess! I can’t say I am too worried. We are under local restrictions so we are not going out, and, as we aren’t allowed visitors we should be alright.

I need the unders vac and hubby needs the overs vac. I was going to wait until we could go together, but I think we had just better grab one as they become available.

On the plus side, I remember years ago reading that the first vaccines that become available are based on predictions, whereas the ones that come out later are based on flu strains that are in circulation. Possibly not right, but I’m a great believer in silver linings!

Albertdog profile image
Albertdog in reply to Troilus

We have the same problem .. for my wife and I to go together (I'm 84) would have to wait until November.

However, if I book a slot for myself - and my wife takes me I can get a slot in October - but she will have to go separately for hers - even 'tho she is getting cancer treatment...😥😥

Troilus profile image
Troilus in reply to Albertdog

I checked again today. The over 65 jabs are due on the 5th of October. They won’t book anybody in until they have got them.

I really don’t understand the system this year. The surgery has always contacted us in the past and given us appointments, yet this year, according to gov information, we are supposed to get ours first, shielders and all that.

Looks like I am going to be up early next week trying to book in before they are all taken. I’ll probably be number 302 in the queue!

A bit of a free for all this year. First come, first served.

Let's stay hopeful, as yes there is a shortage of flu jabs! Been watching breakfast news this morning! GP PRACTICES ordered 20% more flu vaccinations but they order it a year before! Because of the Pandemic, people want to protect themselves this year! But they have to prioritize so more vulnerable people can get it first 🙏🥰

That's interesting. I've been having them for over 10 yrs due to my asthma and RA- and I'm 63. I haven't been contacted yet. It's usually done at the same time as my B12 jab so hopefully......although the way things are at the moment who knows.

I also wonder if it depends where you live in the UK, as some here have problems to get a flu Jab 💉 but when I googled it Boots Pharmacy came up! When you more vulnerable you need a flu Jab! 2019 I had my first one, as had heart attack 2019 February! So now I can have a flu Jab every year! It did protect me and only had once a light cold during that winter, bonus! Secondly work in a restaurant kitchen which makes me more at risk now!

Hi

I tried to book flu jabs yesterday for my husband and I.

My husband will be 65 in December and I was able to book a jab for him next week. I was advised they are not yet doing jabs for any under 65s.

I’ve had the flu jab every year for the last 8 years or so and it’s really helpful as I’ve avoided the flu.

On a plus side a flu jab only lasts for so long & therefore sometimes having it a little later in the season can help.

I live near Coventry, my sister lives in Knaresborough she's pretty much still staying in home at the moment due to the massive invasion of tourists in Harrogate and Knarsborough not much social distancing in the narrow streets, probably the same where you are.

Harrogate is a lovely town and it reminds me of Cheltenham as it's a spa town.

From my experiences the Two weeks never comes when they tell you to ring back say like to me once it was ring back tomorrow and I never did as I reckoned that tomorrow wouldn't come and I had better things to do than keep ringing them all day every day!

Hello to you all I am in the next age bracket 70+ and have health issues. Boots emailed me to to book appointment so I did had mine last week. Don't forget that the guide lines seem to have change in that we the older generation are getting better at looking after ourselves so give yourselves a pat on the back and don't get complacent. My surgery has not yet mentioned Flu Vaccination to me. So although its miserable time I am getting myself ready for the winter by stocking up on my hobby so that I have plenty to keep me occupied. I think this will be different as the shops etc will be be better organised. I view this virus as another Bleep on life's journey, and we've done it once we can do it again. I don't think there's a shortage just the way it been organised.

Our son had hodgkins lymphoma so our whole family of 5 shielded until end of July.My husband age 55 , type 2 diabetic and works in nhs got his appointment from doctors and had his on saturday. Our son didnt get an appointment.Asked at doctors and was told flu jabs are ordered a year in advance therefore pre covid and they haven't got enough.Waiting for the next batch. My mum and dad over 70 had theirs, also my sister who had a stroke. Tesco haven't got appointments locally till end of October.I'm mystified why at least my son wasn't sent for when we had a letter and phone call telling us not to leave the house not even for shopping and to wipe any shopping down.We are prepared to pay if necessary but none available at the moment.Must admit I can't wait for us all to get one .

I got a text to say I’m now having to wait 4/6 weeks to get a letter to go to a central clinic in Glasgow for the over 65 flu vaccine. Our nurse usually does it in our tiny surgery which has honestly been so quiet when I go for my bloods. I’ve never even seen a doctor in it when I go. Where have all our doctors gone? 🤷‍♀️

Yes- and it was easy to see that one coming. Boots is making a nice little profit from all the £12.50’s from people concerned about their health but can’t rely on the government to come good on their ‘promises’. Partly I’m disgusted, partly I’m glad Boots are there to provide the service- but they are an American owned multinational pharmaceutical company, not a part of the NHS.

in reply to Inksplat

I learned a valuable lesson over the upset over my cancelled events is that of taking the governments promises with a grain of salt!

I visited the boots factory and shop in Nottingham many years ago and also the Canal museum there before they shut those places down.

I would rather regret going and doing things and not liking them than regretting not doing them at all!

I cant see how it's possible to catch the flu virus whilst avoiding COVID19 .. my husband has had it and said for over 65's they have to use extra long needle and several days later, the muscle in his arm is still giving pain.

We both had our flu vaccines yesterday despite being under 65 (UK).

It might be worth writing to the practice manager about why you should be prioritised with CLL and/or contact your specnurse and ask her to contact the surgery for you.

in reply to specsx4

I thought those with underlying conditions would get their free flu jab first.

It’s all a mess tbh. I was sent an appointment letter but for a date when I was unavailable so I called the surgery only to be told it couldn’t be changed & I would go down as a no show! They would send a second appointment but if I failed to turn up for that too I would be discharged! I’m 3,000 miles away! 😡

in reply to Otto11

The health service arent exactly nice to their employees either and they made a big mistake when their management bullied me and I had fought them every step of the way until an incident last year that had cemented my decision to resign and after that I had handed in my notice and the only thing I regret is not having done it sooner!

With myself they were horrible just for the fun of it as with every request that I had made it was just a plain old nosy no explanation of why just no and that attitude would wind me up!

They need to accept that the world doesn't revolve around them!

All that the bullying was over was because I wouldn't give them their own way which is pathetic really!

Otto11 profile image
Otto11 in reply to

Both myself & my daughter worked for the NHS we are both medically retired but my daughters situation was made very stressful with lies. I know what they can be like 🙁

in reply to Otto11

I had put up with their silly nonsense for too long when I look back and I wish I had left sooner but I did my best with what I knew at the time and had decided I was leaving off my own accord rather than sitting around waiting for them to push me out of the place like they had done to other colleagues when they had it out for one girl there who was sick for a year and then ended up sacked for being sick who they had bullied!

They had threatened me with things just to bully and control me and I would tell them they had no business to threaten me with things!

Anyway it was after a nasty incident in October last year when I had decided enough was enough and had decided I was leaving and had written them a months notice letter and I had worked my notice and I had been determined I was walking out of that building with my head held high on my last day there and that I had done even as I was walked off the premises and had my door pass taken off me at reception in front of everyone and I had cried after that had happened and they had gone partly in relief it was over and grief because that part of my life was over and my dreams has been shattered which really hurts!

I have come to terms with that now and I feel now time has passed that the future at that place wasn't for me and how as that door has slammed shut others have opened up for me as I feel if somethings meant for me it wont go by me.

Otto11 profile image
Otto11 in reply to

Yes it’s hard that’s for sure. I was a nurse for 28 years but had been off sick for a year when eventually diagnosed. I couldn’t do the job simple as ( pre Biologics) they offered I’ll health retirement. I had no choice. Glad you have other options now x

I had my Flu jab done at Superdrug. Did last year too. Showed proof ---I took a prescription ---that I have PA. I think they are doing under 65 on NHS if people have certain conditions. PA is an autoimmune disorder so we qualify. I don't think they are doing private ones yet. Phone your local branch and ask what their criteria is. Looks like everyone's doing it differently again. Good luck. Stay safe and well 🙏

My GP’s are still waiting for theirs. However, I called my local pharmacist and had my flu shot immediately after the call, as I was parked up outside. So no shortages here in west London it seems, unless the GP’s are having problems and not saying anything.

It’s been suggested, that those in vulnerable groups should have two shots spread out obviously.

you are right it is supposed to be those at risk , nothing to do with age. According to the health minister there is plenty of vaccine available. But its your GP who has to order it. Its a very muddled situation this year. I have had to miss mine due to pending admission to hospital, which means when I come home I will be at risk of flu as well as the virus. Some patients are not even going to get the promised jab and others have to wait longer. Its crazy flu jabs are done annually so all drs have to do is add extra this year to their order. But maybe their budgets can't do that.

Hi

A few weeks ago my surgery said we will phone you when they are in . My friend who is 70 and her daughter who is 47 had theirs last Saturday because they have many conditions. We all go to the same surgery!! I phoned last Thursday and I'm having mine this Saturday 👍😊 my hubby and son have to pay for theirs at our chemist. Love and hugs Lynne xxxx ❤️🤗🌈💜

Flu jabs are carried out in waves of different age groups usually different ages at different times.

Some of the jabs are more tailored to a particular age group.

Believe older people etc get the first wave, but jabs for under 60 etc may not be in the system yet.

But they are available.

Same as last year.

I am an old Brit, 78 now, was born and raised in UK. We used to have a first class medical system, seems like it has gone to the dogs. I remember Boots was a great pharmacy, now it sold out to a US giant?!!! I live in the US, have only had a problem once with there not being enough vaccine. They used to charge $5. then pharma got greedy and it was upped to $25. Now I am on Medicare, so I get it free, as I am older I get the extra strength jab, they recommend Oct for starting jabs, I have a date at my Dr's for this sat. 26th Sept, will also ask for a pneumonia jab, I have one every 5 years. I wish you all well, sounds like the government and NHS is letting you down, for which I feel very sorry about. Sounds like you have an incompetent Prime Minister, just as we have a horrible President who big pharma donates millions to him?!!*** Oh! life, why can we not live in peace together? Perhaps somone(s) of you could set up petitions and bombard Boris and the NHS, demand as tax payers your rights, just a thought. I send you all peace, and success an old Limey.......

Snowdrops_17 profile image
Snowdrops_17

I think I leave petitions to more competent people! But the Labour Party is pushing our Prime Minister and Government more in the right direction! The Pandemic was and still is killing people in every nation! It's like a lion 🦁 prowling around to devour! So on a personal note we all have to be vigilant!

I started this just to find out if we can get at least the important flu jabs for those with underlying health conditions!

It seems to vary from where you live and more populated areas in the UK, age and severity of health problems!

Lots of people are scared and panic because of the Covid-19, which can have a fatal outcome for anyone, but especially those who have underlying health conditions!

We are in a storm, so we need to shelter! No one would go out in a severe storm without being rightly equipped! So facemasks are essential, washing hands regularly, keeping the required distance when going out or like me at work, transport or shopping for essentials and meds! I think it's really important we all follow government's rules, guidelines when we go about our daily lives!

I know it's hard, isolating, depressing at times!

I work in a restaurant kitchen and we are affected now by the 10pm Curfew! Working hours could be cut soon, and the next 6 months could be very unpredictable!

But I need to focus on my Christian faith, trust Jesus to bring us through this extreme difficult time right now! One thing I never do, blame God! He allowed it to happen but it's up to us to trust him to guide us through this! Please don't loose heart, you are all very precious to him!

Have a blessed and wonderful day and think of good things, wonderful memories, enjoy your life sensibly! God bless you all! And stay strong and safe okay!

And praying everyone who needs this flu vaccination will get it! 🙏

Lots of love Christiane ❤️🤗💕😷🌏🌎🌍

Hi, thank you for filling me in, have not been home in 10 years so know things are changing over there as here, and not always for the better. I had my flu jab last Sat Sept 26th, the nurse was so good I did not even feel the needle. Next month I go in for annual Wellness Check up. Will do a blood draw first, then go back the next week for a reading and physical exam, I will ask Dr. if it is time for pneumonia jab.

I am coping, and staying well, just a few minor set backs, I take good care of myself, as there is no one to help me. Here in the US we have gone thousands, over 200,000 dead now. We have an awful president he is a lying scoundrel and offers little or no help to middle and lower class people. The scientists are working hard on developing a vaccine for the CoVid virus, and say a creditable vaccine will not be available until 2021 about mid year?!!**

I wish each and everyone of you good health, be virus free, stay happy (I know that is not easy), I live in the moment, and enjoy each day as it passes, I send you all love, peace and hugs.........
