To get technical, this is an A4 watercolour. It was painted by sprinkling coarse salt into the sky to make small, puffy clouds. The background fields were made by spreading clingfilm over the damp wash, as were the textures in the wings. The latter were painted using creamy ultramarine enhanced using wet- into-wet violet. The white-ish hairs on the body were painted using white gouache.

Lovely painting ๐
Very good. Well done.
It is lovely, very technical, the look of the clouds it very pretty, can I ask, does the salt wash out of the brushes alright afterwards. It is very effective. ๐
The salt never gets near my brushes, Bobby. I sprinkle it onto the drying wash and, once it is completely dry, scrape the salt off with an old credit card.
Ah, it's a good job you told me that. The effect looks great. ๐
My comment was super-technical, wasn't it. What I forgot to say is that right now West Wales is awash with gorgeous thistles and other flowers, and butterflies, bees and moths. This butterfly was, however, inspired by the blur morphos that used to come into our garden on Trinidad.
Amazing!!
Hi Brent, I have to say I really like this picture. I love the way you are experimenting with materials and getting some great effects in your pictures. It must be very satisfying getting such a good result.

Really lovely.. thanks forc sharing ๐๐ทโ๐ฆ
Superb and thanks for the method used.
Iโve purchased watercolor paraphernalia. Still havenโt spent much time with it. Thanks for the technical info on what you did in this piece. I like the lightness of it as well as the subject.
Beautiful, and great techniques
