Shielding coming to an end.

According to the government update from 6th July shielding is easing and from August those who can't work at home will be back to work. It will be interesting what the employers will be bringing in for their vulnerable employees.

This is going to work well imo....not. Like this virus will all of a sudden become less dangerous overnight. All it will mean for me is life will end up being even more dangerous with having to avoid even more selfish idiots who don't care about other's when they are out. This is imo a really dangerous move.

At my previous job they had sacked quite a few colleagues for having been off sick and they were people who had had heart attacks as well and serious illness not people who were just messing about!

I had left that job as I couldn't stand their attitudes and one of my friends said how where there's no sense there's no feeling which is true and I feel I made the right choice although it hurt at first but I'm fine now.

My view is that you can't hide away forever!

Yes it's paused and the NHS Shielding update also said that those who have been keeping the site updated will still be on the list so that they can be advised to re-shielded if needed.

If you want to read the update it's on the NHS SHIELDING UPDATE site.

Yes! As a Tesco checkout chick I can't wait! Not. I m waiting for my "personal" letter from the government telling me to put my life on the line for the sake of the economy xx

I have some choice names of things I call the government that are unrepeatable on here but one things definite in regard to them where there's no sense there's no feeling!

Could you be redeployed for a time to a job in the store room so you are not customer facing? Or would that not work?

Unfortunately there are no storeroom only jobs. I also have dodgy feet and cannot be on them for any length of time, which is why I am on a checkout. 😩 xx

I see.

My aunt is on the check outs and has an AI disease although she isn't immune suppressed.

I think she was much happier when the plastic screens were put up.

I wish I could be more encouraging. I just hope you feel safe when you go back. It will be quite a big adjustment for many.

Thank you xx

At my previous job I ended up in hospital after I had blood clots in my lungs and they had been really horrible over it and had threatened me with the sack just to bully and they had sacked another colleague who had a heart attack as well and another one after he had been off with stress after his wife had a stroke and she isn't very old either!

One of my friends said about their attitude that they are psychotic and how where there's no sense there's no feeling which is very true!

One colleague had been off sick with cancer and was due to return and had gone to see occ health as requested who had said about a phased return and management had said to her she would have to use her leave for it yet others who had been off sick had got unlimited phased returns by management yet she didn't and how is that fair?

Good Morning Catgirl1976

I am surprise that your ex employer got away with such treatment of Employees who were sick people. Didn't you have a trade union at the place you worked? Because the way your ex employer treated you and others is invaration of the discrimation act as amended . Plus also the employment act as amended plus other revenant acts of parliament. If it's under two years I think it is that this happened to you or others I am sure that you and others can clam unfair dismissal against your ex employer. He they should be brought to the attention of the employment and tribunal services department as I am sure that they will be fined a lot of money and you all will receive some compensation for your troubles.

In regards to the ending of the coronavisus shielding for some people. I think that the government are making a grave mistake because of the recent outbreaks of the disease in parts of the country as a whole. I trust the NHS information on the coronavisus more than I do the government. The prime minister is under a lot of pressure to get the country back to near normal as possible. But he knows deep down that he is moving to fast forward in regards to the coronavisus outbreak. Every. Other countries are having a second coronavisus outbreak and it's more dangerous outbreak of the coronavisus outbreak than they did in the first outbreak of the coronavisus. Take care and stay safe always everyone. Peter

There was a union there but they were rubbish!

Someone I met at a party had said to me how the attitude of the bullying managers was rewarded after they ended up promoted after I had left there because of them was a symptom of the organisation in itself being rotten to the core as it was!

They had said to another colleague who's father in law hadn't been very well and she had gone with him to outpatients appointments that no she wasn't getting unpaid leave she was to take that time to go with her father in law out of her own annual leave which I thought was mean!

There was an incident with a colleague again who had come back from having had cancer who had been made to stay late one afternoon because she had come in late due to having had a hospital appointment that morning and I had said at the time how I thought it was bloody mean to make her stay late because of that!

Then there were a number of incidents with myself where they had been mean and petty and there was one when they had begrudged me a couple of unpaid hours off which had caused arguments and had been the start of events that had brought me to the decision to leave altogether after I had tried to save the job by cutting and changing hours but it had been like trying to save a sinking ship and now the only thing I regret is not leaving sooner!

What happened was at home I had to be in one Monday morning to see about a water meter being fitted and they had made me take the time out of my annual leave and I had booked a Valentine's weekend for the February and this had meant that this would need to be changed.

Changing the days in itself doesn't upset me but what did was the way they were unfair about this and what I would have done if I was manager and it was a couple of hours I would have let the member of staff have the hours and say about working them back on their return which I would have done no problems but I was just told no I wasn't having those couple of hours in a nasty way and it had stirred up anger and resentment in me as every time I asked for things it would always be no!

One of my friends had said to me next time they tell you no ask them why and I had ended up saying there wasn't going to be a next time!

Looking back I feel they accidentally did me a favour as if that hadn't have happened I would still be there now getting told no ad infinitum!

Hi Boudica1, I'm sure that lots of shielded people must be feeling quite vulnerable and uncertain now that it's about to come to an end. As someone whose husband has worked throughout the pandemic and had to come home to me, I can only reiterate that whilst employers have a duty of care to employees, we have a duty of care to ourselves too and must take any and all precaution we can ourselves to stay safe and follow all rules put in place, as lockdown eases and we try to get back to a more normal life and restart the economy as best we can. Take care and if you have to return to work, I wish you all the very best when the time comes. 🙏

Hi Ajay! It's great news for shielders and the economy. But I do know that some people who are shielding are really worried about safety at work.

In the daily briefing it was made clear that employees should be supported but it can be quite difficult and stressful to tell your boss that you don't feel safe.

I've been going out from time to time and have had mixed experiences. Some people are great at social distancing and some are non existent. I hope employers make it easy for people. I think some shielders will be very apprehensive after being inside for so long.

Fortunately for me shielding meant that someone else did my shopping and my housekeeper was put on furlough so I had to grab the vacuum cleaner etc., now and again. I have had to venture out twice in the last three months with full PPE and I felt that it was a war zone, with very few paying attention to precaution and looking at me as though I was mad or from Mars. The political/economic decision to end shielding is not based on the safety of those shielding so I for one will not pay attention to the relaxing of the measures designed for our benefit, I will remain at home and only feel safe when there is a proven treatment to this pestilence.
