Lovely. When the flowers fade cut the stalk off, keep watering it and it should flower again next year. Don't worry if all the leaves die, they will grow back. I have several which are on their third or fourth year.

Thanks I will try that. Do I need to keep them somewhere sunny or just put them on a sunny spot same time next year?

Mine are on my front room windowsill, they get Sun from dawn until about one pm in summer, less of course in winter but good light.

Dear strongmouse,

Amaryllis are 'strange' plants, beautiful when in Flower but sometimes Difficult to grow, I find that the best 'approach', is to stop 'worrying'. In a way a 'bit like' scrambled eggs, the more that you 'fret' about them, the worse they are..... just 'bung everything' in a saucepan, over the heat, and stir- easy. Amaryllis are much, the same, 'dump' the soil in the pot, ' bang' the seed in, water the lot, stick it in Moderate light- then leave it! Once it starts to 'come up' support the stem, with a stick. There you are, one lovely Flowering Plant.

If you want a 'Challenge' then grow Sweat Peas.... Put the seeds into a Free Draining pot, separate the 'Good' ones, once they are a few inches high. Bring these 'on' in seedling pots, until they are about nine inches tall, transfer to larger pots- with support sticks in them, let these grow to about two- maybe three- foot. Finally made, or buy, a 'Wigwam' Plant Trainer- or alternatively make a 'Trellis' along a fence (fairly bright but not 'Direct' sunlight). Transfer the Plants, into the Wigwam/ Trellis and add some Plant food- solid or liquid, it doesn't matter. Gently push the soil down, being careful to not damage them- as you have been during the whole Procedure, of course. The plants, should them, start to Flower- Beautiful flowers, with a 'Heavenly' scent. Remove the Flowers, as soon as they open, because the plant wants to make seeds- so, if you want flowers, remove them. Remove from the plant, the 'ties' it makes, to anchor itself and replace with strings/ twine. Why? The same reason that you remove the flowers, the plant is Securing itself- the more Ties, the less flowers.

If you can 'handle' Sweet Peas the Amaryllis are 'Easy As Wink'......

Have fun strongmouse and Don't Worry, you WILL have a lovely flower, maybe a few, in no time!

Hope I amused you, with the Sweet Pea advice, it is actually true....

I grow dozens of sweet peas each year, they are one of my favourite flowers.

I had one of those years ago, they are great to watch growing ☺️

I am downright envious! I have never been able to bring one to bloom.

I think I was fortunate in that the soil was obviously just right for them and I found a space on sunny windowsill. As Andrew said they need watering and that helped.
