Hi everyone,

One of my aims is to use this time to focus on the long list of books that has been building up over time.

I’m just finishing off a book called How to Fail by Elizabeth Day which (contrary to the title) is a really uplifting book/memoir about how we need to embrace our failures as they are key to making better decisions in the future.

Next on my list is Three Women by Lisa Taddeo.

What about everyone else? What have you all been reading?

Hi HelenHU ,

I’m reading “The Things We Do For Love”, by Kristin Hannah. I’m almost done with it and plan to start reading “The Outsider”, by Stephen King( I’m a fan of his and James Patterson).😀👍

Did you read “Doctor Sleep “? I wanted to see the movie, but I’m going to have to wait until we get to be allowed outside, again.

I haven't read it but saw the film last year. Terrifying! Never fully understand why I put myself through it haha

I love Stephen King and have read quite a few of his books. My favs will always be his old ones, like Carrie, The Shining, Firestarter, but I loved The Outsider and Doctor Sleep.

At the minute I am struggling with reading, it is making my eyes water even large print. I have cataracts, which they tell me are not big enough to operate on yet. Anyway I am reading Liverpool Gems by Anne Baker. I have to finish it, then I have all my library books I am told I will not get any charge on. Hey ho I suppose I have plenty of free time.

Hi san_ray70 ,

That’s good to know that you’re not going to be charged anything for the library books.😀👍 I was wondering how they were going to do the returns/checkouts since the libraries here have been closed for the virus and one for repairs. Enjoy Liverpool Gems. Can’t wait to hear all about it!😀👍

I finally finished Liverpool Gems,I enjoyed the story, it had a happy ending, but it was a bit slow. Maybe it is me, anyway I have just started "Past Perfect" by Danielle Steele so far very good.

Activity2004 profile image
Activity2004 in reply to san_ray70

That’s fantastic! I like some of the books Danielle Steele has written. I have a few that I have read a few years ago. I may have to see if I can get a list of them for you.😀👍

I have read so many books in my life, and now I am older I do not remember which ones I have and have not read. It is good that the librarian lets me know if I have already taken that book out. I have lots of my own books and a Kindle but I still enjoy browsing at the library. I for one will be glad when we are back to normal.

Activity2004 in reply to san_ray70

Yes, I can’t wait until things can be where they were with some of the changes, as well. I would like to be able to go back to work and go outside.

As for reading, it’s nice that your librarian tells you what book you have read before. We have local libraries here, but they are closed until further notice for the COVID19.

All libraries are closed till further notice.

Yes. Also, where I work. They don’t want us or anyone else getting sick.

Hi Helen! How did you find How to Fail? I listen to her podcast and love it so have had the book on my list for ages. I try to listen to audiobooks when I run and I just finished You Are Not Alone by by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. It's very suspenseful, which I need on my runs!

Next on my list is Swing Time by Zadie Smith and Into the Darkest Corner by Elizabeth Haynes.

I'm really enjoying it, I also love the podcast and she's so funny and honest. Also I can definitely see myself in some of her experiences about the classic female people pleasing mentality.

I've read Swing Time as well which was really interesting, took me a bit of time to get into but then really enjoyed :)

Hi HelenHU, this is a lovely idea as I often miss some really fantastic books because either I don’t find them or I don’t want to invest in the purchase price without the reassurance that it’s my kind of ‘thing’.

I was thinking that Three Women was on my list of ‘to read’ books too but what I was really considering was Jung Chang’s (White Swans author) Big Sister, Little Sister, Red Sister. Still having to wait for the paperback to come out with that one). So currently have Holy Fools by Joanne Harris on the go and am really enjoying it.

Big Sister, Little Sister, Red Sister is also on my list. Sounds absolutely fascinating. I haven't heard of Holy Fools but loved Chocolat :)

I agree about buying books, I always want to know that I will want to read them again before buying. Charity shops were good for that!

in reply to HelenHU

They were and World of Books online too. I think they are still operational but I’m a bit nervous of second hand books just now. Still I will miss the charity shop ones! Good job most of us already have a stash of unread ones at home!

I have a lot of different books here and I can start my own library!😀👍

in reply to Activity2004

Fabulous, Activity2004, now all you have to do is find enough time to read them all... and that might be right now...

A good book in the sunshine can't be beaten...hopefully this sun will last and we can enjoy in gardens soon!

I hadn't heard of Louise Doughty but when you mentioned Apple Tree Yard, I remembered the BBC version a couple of years ago. Very tense! But definitely makes you come back for more

Hi

I love reading Robert Galbraith books, I also like reading fictional war stories where names have been changed., CSI. Also, books on how brave the Jews were in the Second World War. What they went through should never be forgotten. Sorry, I started to go off on a tangent. Love and hugs to you all Lynne xxxx

Hi Helen, I have just picked up a dusty old anthology of PG Wodehouse as I was craving something cheerful. I had forgotten how funny the Jeeves and Wooster books are - I recommend to anyone who needs a bit of a pick up in these sobering times.

HelenHU in reply to AdeelaHU

Always a classic! There is also a new sequel out that my mum thoroughly approves of by Ben Schott (think it’s called king of clubs?)

Thanks for the recommendation. I will keep an eye out for it (when I can actually visit a bookshop)!
