Back in the day!! When there was no technology so to speak and we had to entertain ourselves.we played outside for most of the day. Unless there was a western on !! Because for some reason I loved Audie Murphy in the old films. But we played hop scotch, skipping, and used to go off for hours on long walks!! And go home when we were hungry!! I spent hours with a cereal box trying to make a house for my Sindy doll!! My mum couldn't afford barbie as there was 6 of us. What are your favourite tv programmes as a child? And favourite game(s)

At recess we played jump rope , soft ball, tag, Cowboys and Indians , hide and seek many more. Recess never lasted long enough. I taught myself to read because my older cousins would hang out on the porch reading comic books and drinking cokes. I used to dress my brother up in my old clothes and take him on walks and introduce him as my new friend. My Mother would make me play with him so we played house, he was the Dad, and I made him go to work. I guess you could say torturing my brother was a primary game. Pam

" My Mother said, I never should, Play with the Gypsies In the wood, If I did she would say, naughty girl to disobey, disobey, disobey, naughty girl to disobey". A hand clapping song Granny taught me. Anyone know how many moves there are in string on hands game of Cats Cradle?. I never got passed two. Now look what you folk have started, I shall be at this meander down the lanes for hours, it will be nursery rhyme reminiscing next!. anne.

Hi I had 3 sisters and we played lots of games. I remember Jacks, hopscotch, handstands, hide and seek, skipping, elastic band ropes which a child held each end and you took turns jumping in and out of the middle bit, dolls, reading Enid Blyton (was a huge fan of hers) and so on. Loved the Wooden Tops, Andy Pandy (omg showing my age now). We always watched Rawhide, Bonanza, The High Chapparel, Land of the Giants, Lost in Space. You have got me on a real nostalgia jag now Angep. Thank you. x

I spent a lot of time alone .. I had my imagination which kept me company but it was a lonely existence. That is why i find it hard to mix now thinking about it. But my imagination was my best friend as it serves me well now :) I am 48 and my fave TV programme was Rainbow. Rod, Jane and Freddy, Geoffrey, Bungle, George and Zippy .. Yes they were my extended family :) I also liked Paint along with Nancy.

I have enormous fun now watching the old childhood programmes on the internet. The magic roundabout, Trumpton. Camberwick green, The clangers with soup dragon, are all available on net. They, whoever "they" are, say we didn,t ought to go back , but it,s given me hours of laughter and sneaky pleasure!. anne.

Talking of childhood games coughalot, I,ve always been interested in the origins of many of them, some of which date back hundreds of years. Apparently, jacks comes from ancient Greece, except that it was played with tiny sheep bones, leading to another name knucklebones. Blind Mans Bluff was popular way back in the times of the Tudor court. Hopsotch, came from Roman England, where courses were laid out 100ft long by soldiers and scotches or scratches were made. The soldiers then had to complete a test in full armour over the course to show their agility. Ring a ring a rosy dates back to the plague years , when a posy of flowers/herbs to hold at your nose was the only defence against being infected. Atishoo , and ashes we all fall down, speaks for itself unfortunately to the fate of the poor victims!. Sorry, I can bore people silly with useless information ( My friends I often do ....I can tell by the glassy look in their eyes )Well, I find discovering where things originate to be interesting, now the stories behind Nursery rhymes...............

And in our " Spare Time " we used to make Dens that only we and our best, best friends knew the location of!( definitely not pesky brothers or sisters) and elaborate passwords and hand signals were required to gain entry. And on occasion the code words had to be shouted out, at the top of your lungs through the secret entrance as your best pal had forgotten it again. And Dens were places to stash food in cases of emergencies like war, or plague, or Great Aunt Angelica visiting from America again. Dens were for squirrelling, vital necessaries like screws and dry socks, pencils and a map in case we ever needed to run away from home, or if our friends needed to run away and we had to hide them. And of course Dens were for stashing sweets!. ( and worrying if there had been a security breech and who may have access to the stash location). But mainly, dens were for lots and lots of sweet stashing, sugar mice, toffee, blackjacks, sweet cigarettes!! (( oh I was so sophisticated) , and wine gums which I was convinced were made using real alcohol. There was freddie the frog and gummy anythings!. little chocolate mice, brown, white and pink, While the big girls ate coconut ice and Turkish delight. And the yearly joy that meant Cadbury cream Eggs!. Who started this post anyway?. Ah yes, it would appear that you are the guilty party Angep!. YUMMY. anne. x x

Angep, An aside, I may have you muddled person wise so please bare with me if that,s the case. I think, I remember seeing your name and a question as to whether probiotics can help with crohns disease. ( and felt obligated to help a fellow purple headed seeker of answers out!) Although I don,t have Crohns myself, I take probiotics for internal inflammation and digestive issues, and I have found them to have made a remarkable improvement in just 3months ). Though I can only speak for myself, you may find googling the words crohns and probiotics interesting/informative. Quite a few sites come up, including some talk about Trials that have already taken place with promising results, I am always keeping my eye out for trials taking place in this country. The ones they have done researching probiotics for crohns, have interestingly enough used the probiotic I take for my inflammation, and as I said I the effect they have shown on my entire digestive system has been incredible. They are a little expensive as it,s the same probiotics that Hospitals/drug companies use. There are other probiotic brands of course, but I would always get them tested to check if the bacteria are active. The efficient but simple milk test is explained on the net, but basically take 2 cups and fill equally half full of milk into each. Put the contents of 2 or 3 capsules of your probiotics into one of the cups, mix, and mark the cup. Cover cups and set aside about 12 hrs or overnight at room temperature. If your probiotics are active, one cup should turn into a lumpy, cottage cheesy consistency, times and looks vary but you will definitely notice something different. Yoghurt drinks are often proved to not have enough active bacteria to make a difference in our gut flora. If I hadn,t have been told about the simple milk test, I would have carried on taking the capsules and drinks and never known if they actually worked or not. I am currently working on a yoghurt and soft cheese with V.S.L. 3 as my starter bacteria, ( some people appear to be getting good results) in theory if you keep some of the batch back as in regular yoghurt making, we ought to have a never ending supply of top notch probiotics so, if you are interested I,ll be happy to keep you posted. I am also looking into Keffir grains, both milk and water with regards to its probiotic properties, and the effects this has on diseases. It is so very interesting the official trials into probiotics. As for my experiments, I shall possibly totally lose interest over the Christmas period and become a born again sofa slouch and just keep buying them. If I have been talking to the wrong purple head and you,re not into probiotics, philosophy or yogurt I do apologise Angep!. anne.

Hi Anne, yes it is me and Thankyou for your response. I'm going to see a homeopath on Monday and am interested to see if she reccomends them. I did lol ok st them but there are so many about I wouldn't know where to start!! What do you use and where do you get them from?

tillycindy profile image
tillycindyβ€’ in reply toAngep

I use a brand called V.S.L 3, which I was put onto by a lady via the liver site and get them direct from ferring the manufacturers. You can buy them elsewhere though, Amazon.com.uk do them I think. They are one of the best, I think it,s around 8 strains of bacteria where many brands have 3 or 4 types and the T.B.C ( total bacteria count) is in the billions versa millions. Gosh, I am rather pleased with myself. I thought I sounded quite knowledgeable for a moment there, I used to work in farming and the bacteria count was the bane of many a dairy farmers life. The Milk Marketing board tested twice weekly, and in short the more bacteria in the milk the less the farmer was paid for his produce. ( The tales I could tell you about the lengths some folk tried to try and get a lower count...putting industrial cleaner in the milk tank on testing days, or tying the temperature gage needle back with cotton so the milk passed as cooler! ) Gosh, I never thought I,d ever find a reason to use the words, " Total Bacteria Count" again after all these years!. Sorry, off on a tangent again, it,s one of my many failings!. Now I,m lost, I don,t know about you!. Yes, V.S.L is one of the best probiotics and used in the trials , there is a home site about it, how to order, common questions and answers. I take half a sachet daily as it,s very strong but I believe very effective. There are other brands of course so check it out yourself, but this works for me and is highly recommended. It is fairly easy to research probiotics on the internet and always interesting. There was some talk last time I looked about the N.H.S ( in the future) prescribing V.S.L 3 for things such as I.B..S ( irritable bowel syndrome ) H.E, ( Hepatic Encephalopathy ) and many digestive and inflammatory issues but I don,t know how far away the Doctors are yet. Gosh Angep, what a word to come out with at this hour ( or any hour in my case) "Hepatic Encephalopathy" thought it made me seem quite knowledgeable ( again) for a moment there. O.k, Sadly it was at the tip of my 2 fingered typing skills and the search engine, and not alas at the tip of my tongue. I would be very interested in hearing how you get on at the homeopath on Monday. I,m very interested in Alternative treatments, supplements and the diets and stories of other people. I do actually listen and not waffle on occasion. Do you have much access to Alternative treatments in your area, and if you do will the N.H.S fund any of them?. I had just found a Doctor willing to let me be treated with acupuncture for a complicated painful shoulder condition, when I moved!. Somethings law I believe they call it.... ( gosh sorry again, my mate reckons if I gave the eulogy at a funeral half the guests would have died of old age before I,d got to the end!). my best wishes, anne.

Hahaha that's funny!!! I've had acupuncture through my doctor for my bad back.im paying myself to see the homeopath. It's expensive but you can't put a price on your health and she's a 3 hour drive from where I live.i already feel let down by my GP practice regarding my diagnosis. I have no faith in most of them except the one doctor who sent me. To hospital as I think I wouldn't be here now if it wasn't for him. After I left hospital I should have had treatment 4 weeks after leaving but I never got the treatment. Even though I mentioned 4 times I hadn't had any follow up. I'm going for MRI scan 29th Dec. Having camera through my stoma on 30th. This is only because I had blood coming from my stoma so got a quick. Appt. it will be 7 months since my op by the time this is done. So I'm trying to help myself you see. Yes I'm intrigued myself as to what will happen. She does kinesiology!!! I have in fact seen someone years ago who practiced this. I had stomach problems at that time!! Nothing like now but she sorted it out in that one session!!! No medication !! All very strange really!! But she didn't seem to be around anymore but it was over 10years ago so she's probably retired!! But yes I shall let you know how I get on. As for the milk it dosnt surprise me!!! Industrial cleaner?? Shocking!!! It's scary what people will do to line their pockets and have no consionce about doing it!!! You sound very knowledgable indeed Anne, I'm impressed!! I find the only downside to googling symptoms and treatments is it throws up lots of things you didn't know about your illness and basically frightens me to death and sometimes ignorance is bliss for sure!!! But realistically it's got to be faced in the end. By the way I loved Trumpton!!! And Mr Ben!!! And when thunderbirds came out I loved It . It used to be on Friday tea time!! We used to have fish and chips and watch thunderbirds!!! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜€My kids loved sooty and sweep!!! I remember them crying with laughter at them. Good old Harry Corbet bless him.
