Hi wildwoman,

I guess you ticked most of the boxes for PMR and therefore, your doctor has put you on pred. After a week on this dose with little relief, you need a higher dose, in my opinion. 20mg would be good. This dose should ease your symptoms markedly in no more than 3 days.

I was put on 30mg of pred for PMR and my pain went completely in 3 hours!

Don't worry about the bloods - I have never had a positive blood test yet and I have had PMR for over 2 years.

I have had PMR for nearly 7yrs now and was put on 15mg of prednisaolone which gave me very little relief, so much so that i doubted it was PMR at all but the doctor never increased the dose,,,I have been trying to reduce the dose at regular intervals to come off the treatment only to fail and have severe flair ups, I get very depressed as I really want to come off the prednisalone. I have been told that if i have had this illness for 6+ years that it is not PMR. What do you think cynbil x

Hi cynbil,

Have you ever been refered to a specialist? If not then you really need to see one. If you have got PMR then the dose you are on is completely inadequate. If you are suffering from a different disease then it needs to be diagnosed by a doctor who knows what they are doing!

If you have got PMR then a bad flare might lead to GCA, it's more dangerous relative. If your present GP won't refer you then change your doctor.

I'm not surprised that you are depressed - any normal person would be.

Good luck, Pats.

Hi wildwoman, i was diagnosed on Nov 26 with pmr. I was given 60 mg of prednisone that day, 50 mg next, 40 mg next day....til i went down to 10 on the 6th day. My relief was within two days, i was out riding my bike when i could hardly get out of bed, climb steps, comb hair. now i have gone down in dosages by the week 10 mg for 4 wks, 71/2 for 4 wks, 6 mg for 4wks, now on 5 mg....my companion, Polly, is still with me but really only aware of it in the mornings....good luck but it seems 15 mg is not enough...Carrie

thanks Carrie, I must say i`m a bit downhearted because i expected better results. I`m not sure if my rheumy will be open to a higher dose, i suppose it depends on her thinking, but when i report back i might try and persuade her. Really glad for your recovery. xxxx

I put a note up on the website today saying that after very little pain relief from prednisolone, my rheumatologist, who described me as "steroid resistant" suggested I try the non-enteric coated pred tablets. It worked and I got pain relief very quickly. Worth asking your specialist about? If you are not seeing a rheumatologist suggest you do so as GPs not up to speed. Good luck.
