I want to share with you all some wisdom from my years of experience in Oral Health Care. I do hope it’s appropriate as I think it’s helpful. One of the most important daily tasks we can all do to decrease inflammation in our bodies is treating our mouth, gums and teeth with the best oral hygiene possible.

It’s easy to overlook your oral health when overwhelmed with the pain and health care focused on PMR. Then add to the frustration of just finding good healthcare the fact that many detest and fear the dental office. However teeth and gums can harbor bacteria and become sources of chronic inflammation that is shared with the entire body. They have almost direct access to sharing their inflammation with your sinuses, your gut and ultimately your heart.

If you have issues with your teeth or gums please seek out good dental care. Not just a nice dentist but with a reputation for excellent work! Make sure your flossing and brushing correctly on a daily basis with an effective often changed tooth brush. Healthy gums without inflammation or infection are pink and do not bleed. I hope you all are blessed with a dental hygienist that truly cares about your oral health as I did in my long and rewarding career! All the best to you and thank you for your support!

And especially true when you are also taking bisphosphonates for bone protection! Really good oral hygiene is a must then.

Hear hear! A couple of months before the PMR struck I had a scan for root canal work. The dentist said I had a lot of inflammation in my sinuses and asked the radiologist for a second opinion. They both agreed there was no discernible dental cause apart from possible infection from the tooth in question. I said I had no symptoms and we moved on.

In retrospect, I think this may have been an early warning sign.

Interestingly it was my dentist and hygienist who first suggested that the inflammation in my gums and mouth that didn’t respond to cleaning and dental treatment may be a symptom of something elsewhere in my body

Fast forward a few months and I’d got a PMR diagnosis.
