Kidney?

Bit of a long shot whilst I monitor and before making a gp appt.

Have had PMR for 3 years. On a v slow taper. Currently 3.5mg.

Around New Year I developed an aching/burning sensation in the area which I think could be my left kidney. Still have it a week later.

I’ve taken a urine test and all is clear. I have no cystitis pain at all.

Anyone had anything like this?

Many thanks

Was this a home test of some sort? Might be a kidney stone but still could be an infection depending on the test you had. Any other symptoms? As you have had it a week with no improvement, a medical exam is worth having.

Hi Snazzy. It was the same urine test that they use at the gp surgery - the dip stick. (I bought it from Amazon.)

Think it's probably going to be a visit to the gp, particularly as I tested for MGUS at the same time as the PMR was diagnosed.

Thanks for your reply

I think I would contact your doctor if you are having pain. They can do tests for you.

I’ve experiencing the exact same thing.

Over five years PMR. Currently 3mg.

I’ve been putting off making an appointment hoping it was muscular and would go away.

Better do it I guess

That's strange!

I put all the symptoms on my gp's online appt system (together with the many things I have tried in order to sort it out) and they called me back straight away for a 5pm appointment today!

I'll let you know how I get on.

GP dip tests aren;t always accurate in ladies of a certain age. Just saying - even though some GPs don't know that either!!

pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articl....

" In older people, urine dipsticks are both too insensitive and too non-specific to be used in clinical decision-making regarding diagnosis and management of possible infection."

If you read the whole thing, ignore the "frail" designation and over 65 is a bit so-so too.

Hi Bridge, and thanks all for your comments.

The GP did a dipstick test (interesting info from PMRpro, above) which he felt indicated higher than expected leucocytes, plus a possible trace blood positivity, so he is sending the sample to the lab for better testing.

I scribbled some whiteboard pen on the area of my body which was aching. Initially, he felt it was a little low for the kidneys, but on consulting with a more experienced gp in the practice, decided he should refer me for a kidney scan, which I think is great progress!

Best wishes for your appt next Monday.

Good lad - and the senior guy too. Been there done that with a GP who thought he was god's gift and I fancied him as my marriage was struggling (many years ago, we remained to gether for over 50s years) so couldn't identify a kidney infection. The half retired one did though.

Glad you got a referral and prompt attention. It sounds like a very efficient practice .

I’m in Norfolk. The receptionist did try and fob me off with a physio appointment but I explained it wasn’t that kind of pain, more of an ache and she relented.
