Forgotten 5mg dose of prednisolone

Morning All. I can't believe this - I've just started the reduction from 5 to 4.5mg so Sunday's dose was 4.5. Went to the dosette box to get my levothyroxine first thing to see yesterday's 5mg still sitting there. It was weird - when I woke up, I noticed my shoulders felt a bit PMR-ish and thought it was a bit unfair after only one reduction (Sunday's) so far.

I'm now eating a very early breakfast and have taken my 5mg for today. My question is - should I take more? I've got a cold too which isn't too bad.

I have looked for help via "search" and found a PMRPro comment that "If you get to the next day before realising, just take the usual daily dose. " That was in response to someone on 2mg - I'm wondering whether, as I'm on a slightly higher dose, I should take more. All advice welcome. Thanks.

As it was yesterday probably little point it taking more today…and extra won’t help your cold just take paracetamol or similar for that.

But try not to do it again, although may t have 😊 Dosette box or alarm on phone might help…

Thanks DL for your prompt response. It's reassuring that it won't be necessary to take more. It's the first time in nearly 8 years that I've forgotten a dose - and I do use a dosette box. Alarms on phones don't really help as I turn them off and then forget! I think maybe having gone out before breakfast meant that eating (and taking pred) was out of my usual routine.

I did get a bit hot and sweaty when I realised what I'd done (or rather not done) but think that's probably because I've just gone into my winter dressing gown! 😂

Out of normal routine is a very common reason…. and yes just dug out my winter dressing gown !

No, you're fine - no point, you need what you need, if you feel OK after the daily dose, no point taking double. Everyone has done it at some point - and switched off the alarm without taking the pills!!! I do it all the time. But I also keep my dosette box and alarm phone together at all times - by the bed overnight and in my handbag if I leave the house. You get into the habit of looking and soon note if there is something there that shouldn't be!!! If you realise during the same day, take the dose late but since you got to next morning - that's OK too

Thank you to you both for the reassurance. I had a look at the Patient Information Leaflet as well yesterday - guess what it says? "If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then do not take the missed dose at all. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose."

So, sorry, I should have read that first - but interesting that my immediate search for trustworthy advice was the forum! Thanks again both.

Yes, I do thank you - panic subsided quite quickly. My cold is okay, but I'm milking it for all it's worth.😂

I've just started on that journey as well Rosie. My Sunday dose was 4.5mg. I forgot meds that day too, but it wasn't my pred. We went out for lunch, so just had a snack in the evening. Because I wasn't sitting at the table to eat I didn't remember that my evening meds were waiting there. I haven't resorted to an alarm yet but it may well be a good idea! Good luck with your reduction.
