PMR Vitamin D and a Ganglion

LifeLongNeedleWorker profile image

My current status, is 88 years old, 2.5 years into PMR and down to 5.5 dose of Prednisalone.

I have recently watched what I thought was a bony protrusion emerge as a bump on the knuckle of my right hand little finger. As it doesn't hurt I am still not worried about it. I showed it to my daughter who immediately said it must be a ganglion which had not entered my head.

We had a bit of a joke about the old method of bashing it with the family bible but since then I have ventured a little bit of research and see that it can be related to vitamin D and wonder if anyone else has experienced this or have any knowledge about this strange phenomenon.

I had one at the base of my R middle finger. I was seeing my physio for something else and she said gently massage it, which I've been doing for a year - no change. A month ago I found it had become much bigger, then suddenly it was not there any more! I guess gentle massage is the way, rather than a big book! Don't know about Vit D.

Yes, I’ve had two ganglions on the back of my hand…& a third is growing, but slowly, thank goodness! Yes, all the stories about hitting it with the family Bible came out…but each one ended up with surgery because they became too big & stopped my ability to bend my wrist & hand sufficiently for normal use. This was a long time ago, & I wasn’t taking Vit D at the time, & I’ve never heard of any link. Um…I assume your daughter is a Dr, or medic? If not, then best to show your lump to a Dr…lumps can be many things! I specialise in growing benign cysts in various places….for example!

Daughter is a retired Community Matron and she didn't say anything about vitamin D. I just googled Ganglion and Vitamin D was a frequent mention with no advice or back up. I have been taking the required vitamin support with Prednisalone and said daughter seemed to think that it may go away eventually, wait and see what happens. It is not painful or in the way at the moment.

Oh, I meant that your daughter diagnosed that it’s a ganglion, not the Vit D reference! I’ve had some benign cysts that have dispersed & gone away…but my ganglions grew to golf ball size…quite quickly! Good luck!

Do not hit it with anything. You could cause more damage.

Thank you for the warning, I wouldn't be brave enough to do that anyway.
