Yes, I did - it even stopped me singing!

Thank you, I'll stop worrying about it now πŸ™‚

If it stops me singing, I think my neighbours might see that as a benefit.

I think Prednisolone can cause this. I first found out when I tried to sing to my grandchildren - no longer possible. My voice sounds scratchy and my throat feels narrow and I am prone to choke - 8 years Pred for PMR then GCA.

Thank you, good to know it's part of the problem

In my case it was definitely PMR - happened long before pred.

Same for me

I can deal with it knowing it's part of the package. Thank you both x

Absolutely, I sound like a man out on the back 40 of a farm!! I had a soft and sexy voice when I needed it. πŸ˜‚πŸ€£ My throat often feels narrow and scratchy too....but we both wear hearing aids. My aids go in from sun up to bed time, my husband not so much. Maybe my thundering voice still sounds soft to him.....actually I think he reads my lips.πŸ’ž

I'm sorry that you all have this too but I feel much better knowing the reason for it. Things are so much easier to deal with if there is a reason, thank you πŸ«‚

hi there,

I had problems with my voice, big time, last year. Hoarse and the lot. Yes, PMR.

Because it did not go ( and I have had β€œsome breast cancer” in the past) i was referred to ear nose and throat specialist. β€œ no worries” no cancer. Great

He referred me to speech therapist, I still am so grateful. She gave me exercises.

See on U tube: lots of stuff.

Semi occluded tract exercises. Basically bubbling through a straw, bubble lips, rasberries and more. I did them and it fixed it, and me! I still do them and my voice is better now, at 72, than it was before. Honestly.

There are lots of singing teachers on line who give us free lessons and advise. I doubt whether β€œ this” would have gone away without me working on it.

give it heaps! With love.

I do these 'straw exercises' as part of my speech and language therapy for my Parkinson's disease.... they've been really helpful. Use 'bubble tea' straws (straight, strong, good diameter) and make sure you have a towel handy the first time... I blew water everywhere πŸ˜‚ xx

Thanks to PMRpro's link and your comment re PD - have just forwarded video to friend who's husband has similar issues [PNVA] to discuss with his speech therapist.

What is that? Google didn't help!

Known as a few things - Progressive Non Verbal Aphasia or Progressive Non Fluent Aphasia.

Comes under the umbrella of Primary Progressive Asphasia - which has made it difficult to diagnose [apparently] -

Yes it is.. and because he’s in deepest darkest Dorset.. not much help via NHS.

At the moment he’s got a private speech therapist [his son is funding] and is going to the local stroke club as they deal with speech issues, and that seems to be helping. Unfortunately he’s given up golf which is a shame as he was very active previously..

Hi LittleJane,I too get it,mainly in morning but whenever I have a β€œ rough” day it rears up.I sound like Louis Armstrong.Am noticing it more now I am reducing pred.xxπŸ‘πŸŒΌπŸ˜œ

I’m also affected in the same way to the point where I can’t sing a note anymore ! I assume it’s one of many side effects but so far no help for it!

I gave a link for a lax-vox tutorial further up - several said it helped a lot when this was discussed before,

Not even considered it may be part of the PMR/Pred prob. I often get it in the afternoon & phlegm in back of throat. I just ignore it. Nuisance though.

Any voice problems that I have are more likely to be linked to inhaled corticosteroids for asthma.

Well - it might just be worth having it checked out. I started with GCA but then, as that improved, developed PMR. Started on high dose Prednisolone, then gradually reduced over a few years - finally stopped late 2022. But around then developed some hoarseness and difficulty swallowing - turned out to be tonsil cancer. Must say that the radiation treatment, though it got rid of the cancer, actually made the hoarseness worse. Singing in choir used to be my main social activity, but no more.

Oh my goodness that is so sad. I sing in a choir and know how helpful it is. I do hope you have found something else. Have you tried playing in a recorder group. ?

Life can be so tough. ❀️

I kept thinking I was getting a cold. Definitely affecting my singing voice. A hoarse alto now. 😩

Me too. Most days but I put it down to my asthma inhaler πŸ€”

Yes, mine occurred prior to diagnosis so definitely PMR - thought it was a virus. It also affected my singing, especially the lower register and throat felt tight.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Meggsy

Upper register for me - went from being high mezzosoprano to low and then almost alto. But I couldn't guarantee what not came out and then my breath control disappeared too!

Meggsy profile image
Meggsy in reply to PMRpro

I guess we’ll just have to settle for brains and beauty to get by. πŸ˜‰

Kaaswinkel72 profile image
Kaaswinkel72 in reply to Meggsy

No don t settle for that. Work on it.

The bubbling exercises as you find freely on line (semi occluded tract exercises) help heaps that is if u do the exercises and fo them correctly.

See a speech therapist or singing teacher who is familiar with this stuff ( some have nt got a clue) to help you if you find it hard to sort out. I hot mine on line and also 5 session through the public health all free of charge! , succes

Yes , I did . When first hit with PMR I had to give up attending my choir for a year as the fatigue was too much and my throat muscles were just so weak . When things improved, ie I retired from work and spent many months doing nothing, I was able to return to choir. My muscles were still weak and an evening of singing left my rib cage and tummy muscles tender, but my voice has returned. Not as strong at all , but I am able to sing again which makes me so happy !
