maybe not PMR!

hello - i saw my consultant rhematologist last week and he doesnt think i have PMR - or at least it’s atypical. If atypical then thats a management problem. So he says steroids are masking symptoms and also causes and im using them as painkiller so he's taking me off them over 6 weeks to see whats really going on. So it is possible i dont have PMR tho my arms do show underlying bursa which is Pmr like. He also was very frank about my weight as im very overweight too - he said tho not caused by weight- its going to exacerbate the inflammation. Hes put me on naproxen again. It was interesting to see different treatment re consultant vs GP. I feel relieved to be seen by a consultant and today having the first relatively pain free day in months. My physio ( private) is also a godsend i must say- each week unlocking muscles and tendons that would otherwise cripple me! So the jouney continues!! Thank you all for your support.

If naproxen is helping it certainly supports the possibility of a different cause. One that would fit that is a spondyloarthropathy - which can present identically to PMR but often it is harder to taper the pred as you get to lower doses. And the need for 30mg is another pointer,

But don't disappear - please keep us informed about developments because it expands our knowledge base too.

As PMRPro says if Naproxen works it probably is not PMR, so your consultant may be right.
