Should I be altering my taper?

Having contracted PMR just over a year and a half ago and having had a disastrous taper last year, I have come down from 15mg to 6.5. I have been following DL's dead slow taper for a few months now, tapering by 0.5mg every 52 days. I am now due to start reducing from 6.5 to 6.0mg, but have noticed contributors talking about 0.25mg every 4 weeks. At this point, should I be altering my regime?

As always, any advice would be warmly welcomed.

How are you feeling in general?

Hi SnazzyD, I feel as well as one could expect with this horrible disease! I get tired easily and have mood swings, but all in all, no real complaints.

If your regime is suiting you, then no need to change it.

Others may have changed to a smaller reductions because they needed to do so, some change timings because it’s better for them.

As the saying goes - if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

However, if you do get into difficulty, then it’s a consideration.

If what you are doing works for you - why change? On the other hand, if when you do a 1/2mg drop it feels harder or the fatigue due to poor adrenal function is greater, that is the time to consider only doing 1/4mg. But when you use the slowed tapers, as you are, it is easier to repeat stages of the taper than it is to cut fiddly tablets. Taking longer to get from one dose to the next achieves the same aim.
