Hi Group,
Any thoughts on itching skin as a result of tapering? I am down to ½ mg pred/day, and itch mainly at night. I take pred around 8am. It's been 5+ years.
Thanks,

Now you have asked-there are related posts to view.
The subject does occur on a fairly regular basis .. not sure there is one simple answer -but you might find some suggestions in previous posts.
I had antihistamine and betnovate from GP
I had that at some point, I forget which-- I think around 5 mg, but not since, so don't know if was connected to the prednisone or not.
It isn't unusual to develop allergies with autoimmune disorders - pred at higher doses manages the effects fairly well but as you taper it is no longer enough.
Is the skin on your hands dry? Dry skin is a very common cause of itching. Try lots of a really effective moisturiser before bed and wear gloves while it sinks in.
Make sure you're using gentle, moisturising gels rather than harsh soaps. Use emollient cream whenever the skin feels dry.
I apply Doublebase Gel to my thighs to counter bedtime itching. I take a daily antihistime for other reasons. I am currently on 6mg of Pred and tapering VERY slowly indeed.
I have a particular spot on my lower right shoulder that itches in the evenings and another point above my right hip on the lower back that itches during the day! And I have a good scratch on my back with my back scratcher before going to sleep. Fabulous! this has only happened since I have been on pred. Could be liver, could be though less likely dry skin. Who knows?
