plantar fascia

we’ll, I took advice and increased my pred to 10mg. For the weeks holiday and it was successful.

Came home last weekend and reduced to 6..still okay. But yesterday I have developed Plantar facia and it is so painful I can hardly put any weight on it. This is the third time in the last few years.

Does anyone else have this problem? Could it be related to PMR, if so should I increase pred again ?

Increasing the pred dose rarely helps plantar fasciitis - unless you increase it a lot!!

There are exercises to do that help and insoles that provide arch support are very helpful. Probably one of the worst things you can do is wear soft unsupportive slippers around the house - over here slippers are called "House shoes" and wearing shoes all the time in the house will also help.

Freezing a bottle of water and using it like the foam roller in the image may reduce the pain. Icing on the area under the heel too, If you do freeze a bottle of water - leave a head space to accommodate the increase in volume of ice compared to water.

Thanks, I will start wearing support shoes around the house…and I am using a golf ball for exercise…Feeling a little down at the moment, it seems to be one thing after another!

I’m suffering recurring PF. I’ve always been really active and not being able to walk is very frustrating. I think pred can make tendons brittle so maybe we’re prone to it. My rheumatologist gave me a cortisone injection which was brilliant, totally pain free a few hours later. It’s worn off now and in spite of exercises with tennis and golf balls, it’s quite painful again. I’m going to ask about another injection at my next visit in May, if I can hold out that long.

Hope you get some relief, I feel your frustration!

If you are having persistent problems, the chances are you need to see a good podiatrist - and improve the equivalent of your tyres aince they are the only thing between you and the road. So to speak ...

Yes, I suspect I’ll have to do that. I was a runner for years and never had a problem, my gait has probably changed over the years.

It does with PMR as well, never mind simply getting older.

Or use a frozen lime! That worked instantly for me.

yes, I’ve had the problem for over 20 years, on & off. I now have custom made insoles but they have to be built up so high at the back they don’t fit in any of my shoes!! Plus they put pressure onto my toes, which have OA! My Dr examinaed my feet 3 weeks ago & gave me a steroid injection in each on, but I have a lot of other problems with me feet, so he was trying to help other things (ankle has dislocated twice in past week, & tendons keep, um, coming out of their position is easy way to put it)! PMR Pro has given a brilliant response, follo that’s & you should be OK! It will go. My recent bout only just gone. One big thing not to do…don’t walk, around at all without shoes on!!

Great here - there are a few brands of shoes that have removable insoles that can then be built up as required and fit back into the shoe though trainers are still a bit problematic and the ones that do accommodate almost everything are a bit granny-ish. I still struggle to accept I am ... A granny that is ...

The help is available here, & I had new custom built insoles delivered this week. My problem is my toes need to be off the ground due to bad OA & my heels need to be off the ground for PF, & I’m on the cusp of having to have custom shoes made.,Trainers are really the only think I wear now…& walking boots..but the ‘built shoes’ are boots, really!! There’s a lot available, though, here, too, & the podiatry people are great!

Yes, it's really painful. Correct insoles are a must, inside and out plus simple exercises. It will go in time so take heart and never walk on hard floors in bare feet. That's lethal.

The best thing, if you haven't already, is to go to a clinic that can assess gait and foot related problems. It may be podiatrist or physio but needs to have that specialised facility.

Some places prescribe customised insoles that are really hard and springy but you will need to find what works for you and what they are trying to correct. I have luckily been able to get away with suede covered foam ones which fit in most shoes and slippers.

I'm quite a believer in sometimes walking in bare feet round the house but not in a pain period.

Where I live there is a twenty week wait to see physio on NHS I will persevere with the insoles I have…thanks

I was diagnosed with Plantar Fasciitis yesterday by a Podiatrist. I’ve had painful feet & ankles for about 6 weeks and wasn’t sure of the cause. To cut a long story short - all to do with tight calf muscles and I have to do an exercise leaning forward against a wall to stretch them.

As you say very depressing on top of everything else. Just seemed to get control of my PMR and something else comes along.

What sort of pain and where?

Jeanlindenburn profile image
Jeanlindenburn in reply toPMRpro

The pain is in the mid calf, not all the time, but feels very tight when I am walking and a niggling pain.

Have you asked the GP about it? It could be the tendon but there are other things that need ruling out.

I will try to see my GP tomorrow, I have to book in before 8.30 on line and wait to see if there are any telephone appointments left… none today
