Where I live there is no 1mg pred . The smallest dose is 2.5mg . I’m trying to taper and I would require 1mg pred . Should I use a tablet cutter ?
how to get 1mg doses in pred?: Where I live there... - PMRGCAuk
how to get 1mg doses in pred?
Your bio says nothing of where you live udupik. My 1mg pred comes from our pharmacy, but is obtained from either of the Marketing Authorised companies, Wockhardt UK ltd. Ash road north, Wrexham, LL13 9UF or Strides Pharma UK ltd, Watford, Hertfordshire WD18 9SS
So long as plain uncoated tablets they can be cut.... but not if they are EC or GR ones [usually coloured].
Plus you could use a very slow taper [it's one of the reason they were first designed].
See here for examples -
What type of pred are you on? Plain, white pred or coloured enteric coated ones?
Plain white
They can be cut using a pill cutter. And if you combine them with the slowed tapers, you can taper quite easily - in terms of dose that is!
Where are you that there are no 1mg tablets? Though there are places where it is 5mg and that is all.
I regularly cut 2.5mg in half and have cut the halves in half for 0.625mg. It is possible with a sharp thin bladed knife but a tablet cutter should work.To be honest it's not an exact science. Tablets do not contain exactly the amount stated but it is within +/- a small amount. Add that to bioavailability, pharmacokinetics and metabolic differences between patients and different brands it won't matter if you don't take exactly 1mg. That's why the slow taper protocols are so valuable.
The smallest pred. tablet available in South Africa is 5mg. I use a combination of the LIQUID FORM of pred. to get the correct doses. MrsNails gave me this tip a few years ago and it works well for me. I'm currently tapering to 3.5mg.
Don’t know if it’s available for you, but I have a dissolvable tablet form (in UK). I can therefore dissolve say 10 mg in a known liquid quantity and consume a percentage of that.
Really!!! I knew they were more expensive, just not how much more. I’m on them because of an intolerance to the normal tablets - the one’s I was initially given contained milk products.
You have a good reason - I did remember that - but I happen to know because I found the edict issued by a midlands hospital Trust instructing their use should be restricted unless there was a justifiable need and they quoted the relevant prices!!! Makes enteric coated look cheap but they restrict them too in some places.
