my hubby never thought he’d be joining our Pred “gang”, but a trip to A&E yesterday (7 hours!!) showed that he’d either a bronchial reaction to the tamsulosin he was taking for his prostate, or he’s got a viral infection. He’s been prescribed 30mg for 10 days, which the doctor said would sort out either option.

I must admit that despite the horrendous waiting time, the doctor we saw couldn’t have been more thorough, and did every test possible, including x-rays. So we can’t complain at all - especially when you look round at the fella patients & see what a state they’re in.

So: well done NHS yesterday 👏

Thanks DL. I’ve told him he’s had his moneys worth this year already!

And he definitely had a full MOT yesterday 😃

Pleased to hear about the good service you received from the NHS.

Yes, praise where it’s due indeed.

Thats good to hear regarding the NHS.

Wishing your husband a steady and satisfactory recovery.

Thank you, Kendrew. I’m sure once he gets the Pred in his system he’ll improve a lot.

Seven hours seems quite moderate these days ... Hope it does sort him out - miserable being unwell at a holiday weekend, probably even more miserable being on duty in the ED like my daughter yesterday though she is off the rest of the weekend. Her husband works for the traffic police - he's on on Sunday. Always seems a bit pointless, everyone is parked in the jams ...

Tell him get well soon!

Your daughter does such a challenging and difficult job. You must be very proud of her.

I am. Of both of them.

Doraflora in reply toPMRpro

Thanks PMRpro. The doctor told him for his age his heart is in very good order.

Is your daughter in this country? Thank you to her, your son-in-law, and all the others who work these unsocial hours.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toDoraflora

She had some unpaid overtime today - their nextdoor neighbour hadn't been seen so they went in with the other neighbour who had a key and found him dead in bed. Nice way to go but it rather messed up their day off dealing with the police,

Doraflora profile image
Doraflora in reply toPMRpro

Oh no! That poor soul being on their own😢 but, as you say, what a way to go.

They won’t forget this day off!

Hubby has just asked me if it’s alright for him to stop taking this course of 30mg Pred after the 10 days has finished.

I said yes, but I’ve just been on that ‘G’ site and it seems a few years ago there was some question mark over short term usage.

I know for a fact, PMRpro, that you’ll have all the answers, plus DL, and all the other wonderful experts on here….

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toDoraflora

What sort of question mark? It is perfectly safe to stop immediately the 10 days are up - he may "feel" the change but there are no real risks. And if he has enough he could halve the dose for a couple of days to soften the change.

Doraflora profile image
Doraflora in reply toPMRpro

The question mark related to whether there were any health consequences to just stopping after being on a short dose, but that article was a few years back.

I knew you’d tell me right, PMRpro!😉

Bet they have some tales to tell at the end of their shifts!.....

I’ve attended the NHS A&E on two occasions since Christmas. First time was on Christmas Day and I was admitted within the hour although I was walk in patient. The second time on Mother’s Day when I accidentally scratched my eye and ended up with a very large blood blister. On the second occasion I saw somebody and left within the hour. So all in all a wonderful service.

My only gripe was the £3.40. I was charged for parking for one hour on Mothering Sunday.

I’ve also just had my first cataract removed. From seeing Specsavers and being referred on Saturday morning 2nd March I ended up having my cataract removed at SpaMedica via the NHS contract on 22nd March (of the same year!). 👏👏👏

Doraflora in reply toRuins67

Wow, that is good service!

Re parking, we’re so fortunate in that if we don’t feel like walking to the hospital from here (20 minutes ), we can park on a side road closer to the hospital and just walk down to it without having all the palaver of getting a parking ticket. 😃

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toRuins67

Think of the staff - who also have to pay ...

Ruins67 profile image
Ruins67 in reply toPMRpro

I do. I only wish all the money went into the coffers of the NHS. But so many parking companies are in charge of these car parks now. When you are desperate for medical staff to work in hospitals, you would think one of the incentives would be free parking.

Doraflora profile image
Doraflora in reply toRuins67

I totally agree

KCRoyals profile image
KCRoyals in reply toRuins67

It does but then goes to the pen pushers, admin staff and subsidiaries who run the hospitals. One matron was worth 10 admins.

Doraflora profile image
Doraflora in reply toPMRpro

I know. I think that is absolutely shocking!

My sister-in-law often struggles to find a place when she gets to work.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toDoraflora

My daughter often goes into work 2 hours before her start time just to get a free space, She then used to go for a run but I think she studies now since her knee objected.

"a bronchial reaction to the tamsulosin" ...Interesting....I am on this drug as well for a few years now,,,,good to know...hoping for a good outcome for hubby!

Doraflora profile image
Doraflora in reply toJoseph14612

Thanks Joseph14612. He’s waiting to have a chat with his own GP re an alternative medication to try.

We’re all so different in how we respond to things….

I find that trying to get a parking space and get to my appointment on time sometimes more stressful than the procedure I’m going for! 🌸

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toTiggy70

It's great here - train goes from the village to the hospital, bus goes to the door of the hospital in the next town, closer than the carpark, and the big regional hospital is 2 trains and a bus to the door, even a special bus to the cardiology unit!

Hello, Just read your post re Tamsulosin, my husband was started on that drug in November last year and within 3 days he had a reaction to it, just a nasty rash on arms, chest and neck we spoke to our surgery and were advised to stop the drug immediately.

He was prescribed a drug called Finasteride 5mg last month and again after 3 days use he came out in another nasty rash but this time he experienced breathing difficulties, it was 7.30am on a Monday morning and I took him to A&E an hours drive away. He was prescribed 30mg Prednisolone for 3 days and also Chlorphenamine 4mg antihistamines we arrived at A&E at 8.30am and on our way home at 11.30am excellent service 🤙 NHS.

We do need to make another appointment with the surgery for the way forward with his enlarged prostrate. Just thought I would tell you our experience.

Also has a pacemaker which is why I was concerned about his breathing.

Joseph14612 profile image
Joseph14612 in reply toMeggie22

Thank you....This is the first I have ever heard of a bad reaction to Tamsulosin.....I hope they find something else for your hubby....it is just to help drain people with enlarged prostate.... I have been on it for a few years with no problems, but lately it doesn't seem as effective as it used to be, not that it did much to start with. I may consider stopping it as well.

Meggie22 profile image
Meggie22 in reply toJoseph14612

yes hope so - he was originally told he would only have to take Tamsulosin for 6 months.

Doraflora profile image
Doraflora in reply toMeggie22

Wow, what a similar scenario. My husband has also got 30mg Pred - but for 10 days. And only two days in, he’s feeling more or less “normal”.

These chemicals eh?

I hope your husband continues well and thank you so much for telling me your story.

Doraflora profile image
Doraflora in reply toPMRpro

Never?!! What a very small world. When did he leave cleethorpes out of interest?

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toDoraflora

A LONG time ago! He went to uni in 1969 where we met. But his step sister is still there and I'm still in contact with a school friend of his. His mother was in Clee until the early 1990s, when she moved to live with us in Scotland, so we visited quite a lot.

I hope Pred works its magic, glad you got the gold star treatment. Was your doctor young? Mine was when I went to A&E and he was so thorough and knowledgeable . It’s reassuring.

Doraflora profile image
Doraflora in reply toSheffieldJane

No, he was middle-aged, but had such a lovely bedside manner so to speak. It really makes all the difference when you are treated as a person and not just a number.

When he gave my husband the news that all his organs were fine, following the x-rays & tests, he told us to “go to the pub to celebrate “🤣

Doraflora profile image
Doraflora in reply toSheffieldJane

Well: 7 days into the 10-day course of Pred, my husband has said this morning that he feels 10 years younger. He says he’s buzzing and hasn’t felt this good for years! No aches & pains anywhere. Even “the cough” is vastly improved.

All Great news, but it makes me wonder how he’ll be after the course of Pred finishes🤔

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toDoraflora

Back to normal!!! It is that effect that makes doctors think that "everyone feels better on pred". Maybe works for the otherwise well, not so much in PMR ...

Doraflora profile image
Doraflora in reply toPMRpro

I’ve told him he can’t stay on Pred for ever!

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toDoraflora

Er ... Why not? ;)

Doraflora profile image
Doraflora in reply toPMRpro

Ha. All the associated meds like Omeprazole, AA, Adcal……

Plus any side effects which might kick in.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toDoraflora

Um - no PPI, no AA, just take vit D, did take AdCal-type stuff for a few years though, for me. And minimal identifiable side effects ...

Doraflora profile image
Doraflora in reply toPMRpro

Hmmm. But as hubby says: as good as it is to feel 10 years younger atm, being on Pred for longer is only masking the aches & pains. Plus the extra chemicals on top of his current regime.
