The most likely reason is that the antiinflammatory effect of the pred isn't lasting the full 24 hours. Tell us a bit more though - how long you have had PMR, starting dose, current dose, what time you take pred, when the pain starts and where the pain is. That would help us help you

Obvious answer would be because it’s not fully controlled. But as you don’t say what dose you are on, how long you have been diagnosed or give any info it’s a bit difficult to give a more meaningful reply. 😊
I had bouts of time where my pain would come back at night. In those cases, I took 2/3 of my dose in the morning and 1/3 before bed.
I have to split my dose to have more pain relief around the clock, because it was definitely wearing off after about 10 to 12 hours...maybe give it a try
