Remember to take it easy

DogAgilityObsessed profile image

Don't forget we are not well! And at this time of year everyone (family, friends and ourselves) forgets we have a disease and cannot do what we used to do (or that we still want to do).

So yesterday I decided to remove myself and walk the dog and go to the gym just so I could be on my own.

I guess that was a mistake! I'm paying the price today as my legs ache and the house still isn't ready for my mother to stay.

And my husband has just shown me the ingredients (lots of sugar) he is putting in the spiced walnut cake he is making for his birthday tomorrow so now I need to politely tell him I'm not eating (much of) it.

I'm finding it hard to get motivated for our small Christmas celebrations. Just me and OH on the actual day because we're doing a replicate Christmas in January for the rest of the family (respective daughters, sons and partners) who are with their other families for the 25th.I did make mince pies (I won't be partaking) and we have planned a nice meal together but I'm nostalgic for the years when I was able to host Christmas dinner for 16 with boundless energy.

Not much of that energy in evidence this year. But I received a gorgeous bouquet of flowers yesterday from my daughter who lives across the world in Reunion Island which really lifted my mood.

Enjoy your Christmas and look forward to the day when all this time of illness will be a mere memory 🎄

I share that nostalgia, Dochaz. In addition, PMR (aka Put the Mockers on Revelry) means I struggle to stay awake if any gathering extends past 8pm.🥱

I did make two Christmas puddings using an ancient recipe and traditional cooking method-6 hours steaming- none of that microwave malarky - and a Christmas cake with those snowy peaks that I’m calling a ‘retro’ cake: hours taken up making sugar paste pine cones and Christmas roses are things of the past. I shall treat myself with a sliver of each while I watch my daughter-in-law’s father making a pig of himself 😇 😉.

I dallied with smooth icing for a few years, but returned to the snowy peak effect… much less hassle….and bought decorations.

As Shirley Conran once said …

…albeit she wasn’t talking about PMR….

But I love stuffed mushrooms! And it’s what OHs are for.

Oh yes… if someone else is doing it!

That’s true 🙂. However, I used to make and decorate celebration cakes of all kinds - weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and loved doing so - free for friends, family or retiring colleagues where for the latter my efforts reflected their hobbies/interests. Mostly self-taught plus a short course to hopefully achieve a bit of finesse 🎂. I miss it but couldn’t possibly work to a deadline now having far less patience and stamina.

PS. A cake for you would depict you (wearing a halo) sitting at your computer with a pile of ‘thank you’ letters at the side. 😇 😂😂

That’s kind of you to say… but halo slips at times… 😉

Having failed repeatedly with any form of icing, should I still make a crimble cake, it is Delia's Creole. Certainly does not need icing (and probably not driving for a while afterwards)

I’ve been banned from going to the gym today. So just the 150 mile round trip to collect my demented 89 year old mother.

I don’t know your mother but I’m sure she will appreciate it -🤞.

Thank you for the reminder.

I am co ordinating a week long heat hub at church

From Boxing Day through to New Year's Eve we are open every day 10 '4 and serving a hot meal at lunchtime. There are lots of volunteers but I still struggle with ot doing everything!

I have just had 2 days resting in preparation does that count?

Yes, that counts as long as you rest up afterwards 🛋️.

So true. Being lectured to via phone by my brother who says I need more exercise, more sociability and to get rid of my beloved campervan did not go down well. I don't want to turn into an habitual moaner about my GCAPMR, but it does no harm reminding people that I'm unwell, which I have just done ... forcefully. Feel better now, even though I may have spoilt a person's Christmas! Do your own thing, everyone! Relax the low-carb diet. Pamper yourselves. Have a good one xxx

Good for you I say! Get rid of your campervan! The very idea ... I had seriously toyed with the idea of going further south with my NEW campervan for Christmas but my daughter and partner decided to come.

You can travel anytime you feel up to it but so nice to have family prepared to travel to stay with you.

The problem is people think you go on steroids and that’ll fix everything. But you moan away here amongst friends. And don’t get rid of the camper van

Don’t forget the mantra replies introduced on this site:

1. It’s not my face that’s unwell

And, if something stronger is needed

2. And you don’t look stupid.

Enjoy your campervan, I love my 32 year old van, makes a good companion for solo holidays when I want to get away from everyone…..that was pre PMR, but I’m sure I could manage if the preds were managing the symptoms ok. What’s so hard about sitting outside having a supermarket salad and glass of something? No power steering, but I generally go only a short distance away…Also.I have an awning and people have always been more than happy to help put it up and I wouldn’t hesitate to ask for help with other things, like getting the bed out. Campervanners are always lovely and keen to have a nosey at each others vans.

Thank you, Freshairfiend! I pootle around the Dorset coast and New Forest with my dog. Power-assisted steering Romahome makes driving easier, and am keeping watch out for second-hand awning. Getting the bed out is challenging, involving contortions which leave me exhausted and aching. But the glass of something always finishes the day nicely. No way am I parting from this vehicle which is my incentive and freedom. Roll on the good weather, and happy camping; happy Christmas!

Exactly what I'm hoping for when the weather improves a bit!

Go girl! I got a second hand awning off eBay, which has been brilliant. I pootle in Devon.

Have a restful rest of day…unless you’re letting your hair down for the sheer hell of it!

On the RARE occasion I decide I am off sugar. and cannot eat it. I simply say. DOC said no more sugar. that it is making this fool disease worse and possibly encouraging another!

Daughter makes our traditional steamed pudding and wife makes crimble cake which takes 2 wks of upside down brandy infusion before homemade marzipan no icing. Sadly I've only had one slim portion of each. Can't take the sugar now. I wish...............................😢
