I have found out can't get GP appointment until late on next week, treating my hip pain as a flare just now and have upped my pred by 5 for 10 days, not sore in bed just when walking sitting on ice pack to see if it helps, thinking my poke in eye and 2vacines and a walk with daughter haven't been the same since, the problem is do I go back to 4 when it's time even if hip still painful, don't want inflammation to get out of control or do I need to go up more, Help xx

You can stay at the increased rise for up to 14 days and then drop back down to just above previous dose… so I’d try 5mg .

If the hip hasn’t improved after 2 weeks then I’d be looking at another cause - rather than PMR ..

Thanks for update -at least GP Is doing something.

As you say, you have done what you can for your sister, if she’s doesn’t want to take your advice/help then that’s her choice.

..and don’t let it spoil your Christmas - enjoy yours and I will mine as well, so thanks…

The sore hip is probably simply because of the mechanical irritation together with the PMR "feeding" the inflammation which is what makes it harder to get rid of. Avoid walking and stairs as much as you can, together with the icing for 20 mins at a time. As I say, using a crutch does help because you can relieve the pressure on the hip.

What kind of hip pain is it? If it's bursitis (as opposed to sciatica or something else) I have discovered a great exercise, called the clamshell, which in a matter of days resolved hip pain which had bothered me off and on for years, and it has never returned, after a couple of years! There are other exercises but I don't seem able to find the right page this evening. But here is the clamshell:

I totally agree, Heron. I've used these exercises a few times with great success

Hope it helps. Did you make sure it's right for whatever is troubling your hip? I asked Dr Google what symptoms of sciatica were, and bursitis. And it was really clearly not sciatica but bursitis. Hips also, a few years ago, were the only joints imaged which showed no sign of osteoarthritis.

Just looked at Dr Google, and don't think either of them, lol

Best not do the clamshell then. Don't want to make things worse. I didn't "feel it" in the way I think you must mean. It was just a normal motion, and then very quickly the desired result with no more pain as I walked.

if just one hip, could be so many things…not necessarily PMR, surely? I have dreadful pain in left hip right now & its trochanteric bursitis. But I also have osteoarthritis in the other hip, & a lot of my sciatic pain affects the other hip. Just a thought. Always easy to blame PMR for everything!!

Hi pixie, putting it down to flare at the moment, but wil see GP, put my mind at rest. Keep thinking I could need new hip but deep down I know I don't but need dexa scan it's 5 years xx.

Good luck! I’ve never had a dexa scan. I’ve had ultrasounds of hands & next week I have feet to be done & several x-rays of my hips! The muscles attached to my hip bones are growing bone material on the muscles. I didn’t think everybody has a dexa scan!

You don't say if you've tried any over the counter pain killers on the hip. It might be worth trying a few days of Ibuprofen if you can tolerate it and some paracetamol too. You can take both. I found that my knee which, I thought would need replacing, was in fact inflammation not further damage. So treated it with exercise and paracetamol and antiinflammatories. Hope your hip feels better soon x

Yes have tried paracetamol, can walk no problem maybe a hint of pain, but it's going up steps that's the problem xx
