HAIRLOSS: I am tapering off prednisone and suddenly... - PMRGCAuk
HAIRLOSS
Unfortunately it is quite common, could be Pred , or more likely as a result of your illness [in fact any illness can cause similar but it can take a few months to show].
Maybe have a look at this post link from the FAQs for all things hair related -
Remember, what's happening to your hair is not an instantaneous thing from yesterday or last week. It's reponding to whatever was going on some weeks or even a couple of months ago. Perhaps you were on much higher pred then? In which case just hang in there and wait through a similar delay as it recovers when you're on a lower dose. If you find it's depressing you when you see yourself in a mirror, try to think of something you can do to brighten up appearances. I remember when I couldn't get my hair cut during the covid lockdown, I ended up finding a bright scarf I could use like a big hairband to pull the hair away from my face where it was really bothering me. Maybe you can find a similar comforting solution?
Same here. Over 7 months on pred and my hair was still thick and glossy as ever. About 3 weeks ago, it turned to frizz virtually overnight and it is falling out in handfuls.
My previously thin, straight, greasy hair fell out at the start of my steroid treatment in 2016. Like you say big chunks and very scary. However now on a maintenance dose of 5mg and my hair has all grown back. However my hair is now much courser and wirey and has frizzy curls a bit like a wire haired terrier! It can be tamed with a good hair cut, products and occasional straighteners!
My hair started to thin a bit although I was only on 15mg. I began taking a biotin supplement and after a few weeks my hairdresser noticed new growth.
